Education Abroad Programs Recommended by the Department:
All of the CIEE Shanghai programs and the IES Beijing programs are recommended for the quality of their programs and their proximity to major sights. CIEE: Shanghai, Accelerated Chinese Language program is recommended for language intensive interest, and CIEE: Shanghai, Business, Language and Culture program and CIEE: Shanghai, China in a Global Context program are recommended for cultural or business interest. Both IES Beijing programs offer a unique home stay option for the complete language immersion environment.
CIEE: Taipei, Intensive Chinese Language and Culture is designed for intermediate to advanced language students who have an interest in improving their Chinese while having the opportunity to take non-language courses taught in English that aid in understanding Taiwanese culture and society.
Hong Kong: Chinese University of Hong Kong, is an exchange opportunity for Penn State students, offering a wide range of courses Asian Studies and Contemporary China Studies, among others.
Academic Notes:
Study abroad is not required for the Chinese major, though it is strongly recommended and is indispensable for students seeking a career using the language.
Students should plan to study abroad after successfully competing CHNS 110 on the PSU campus.
