Education Abroad Programs Recommended by the Department:

Athens: History, Culture, and Archaeology of Greece (Spring semester) 
This faculty-led program takes students to Athens for a spring semester devoted to Greek culture from antiquity to the modern day. 15 credits of coursework (9 credits at the 400-level) include an introduction to Modern Greek language and culture, and courses the history, archaeology, and art of ancient Greece, and athletics and Olympic sport in the ancient world, with topical courses in the field of expertise of the faculty director (which might include ancient history, philosophy, literature, rhetoric, and archaeology). Students live in apartments within walking distance of the Acropolis and the heart of Athens, experiencing day-to-day living in a modern Mediterranean city while also learning through monuments and museums about the unique cultural heritage of Athens. Field trips throughout the semester take students to the most important sites of ancient and medieval Greece, including Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae, Epidaurus, ancient Sparta and Byzantine Mistra. Typically, longer excursions visit either the island of Crete or Macedonia and the city of Thessaloniki. Rome: Study Tour of Roman History and Archaeology (Summer) 
This study tour offers students the opportunity to experience the the history and archaeology of the ancient city in an 18-day program based in Rome, with excursions to nearby sites and to the Bay of Naples. Students stay in the heart of Rome, within walking distance of many ancient remains, museums, and other cultural sites. The daily visits to the important archaeological and museum sites in Rome and at other nearby sites (such as the Roman port and suburb of Ostia). There also will be a three-night trip to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Helleno-Roman city of Paestum. Historical and archaeological lectures will accompany each site visit. The students will be required to participate actively in site and museum visits, based on readings assigned and other exercises, earning either 3 or 6 credits.

Tel Akko, Israel: Anthropology, Classics and Mediterranean Studies and Jewish Studies (Summer)
This unique and multi-faceted archaeological summer field school at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Akko works with students to design their own 6-credit academic program, especially suited to their individual needs and interests. Offerings include archaeological methods and excavation, survey and GIS, conservation and community outreach and archaeological sciences. Independent studies and internships relevant to the history and archaeology of Akko and its eastern Mediterranean context are also possible. This summer program is cross-listed and fulfills Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Jewish Studies and Anthropology course requirements. For details, contact Professor Ann Killebrew.

Academic Notes:

Students interested in studying abroad and applying credits towards Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies major or minor requirements should consult with the Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies adviser about the process for receiving approval for courses not listed on the course equivalency list. For courses not already evaluated, the Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies undergraduate director will determine how credits taken abroad may count towards the major or minor. Ideally students should start this planning before going abroad.
