Up one level
Sanjana Roy

Hometown: State College, PA
Major: Economics
Minor: Entrepreneurship and Innovation

How did you learn about this opportunity?

I was contacted by a company called Dream Careers. They have an application process and once you are selected you are matched with the industry and type of company of your choice. After indicating that I was interested in their New York program and in Market Research, they matched me with Scholastic. I interviewed and got the offer 2 weeks later!

Tell us a little about your experience.

I was a Market Research intern at Scholastic's Consumer Research Department. Over the course of my internship, I supported business units within Scholastic on both quantitative and qualitative research initiatives. I also managed 6 research engagements including usability testing, focus groups (online and at a facility), and brand tracking. I absolutely loved my experience at Scholastic. My managers were friendly, easy to talk to, and willing to help. They took an interest in my personal and professional development. They even set up a Qualtrics training program for me after having shared my career interests with them. I would love the opportunity to work with them again!

This further sparked the entrepreneur in me and encouraged me to be a self-starter in every way possible.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Economics is teaching me to find the balance between thinking holistically and being analytical and detailed oriented. Those are the main skills required in a Market Research role, which is my career goal upon graduation. This internship helped me improve my Excel skills, graph analysis abilities, and business report writing. I feel more prepared to pursue my economics degree having participated in this internship. My manager's supportive leadership style also helped me take charge of my learning through the internship. This further sparked the entrepreneur in me and encouraged me to be a self-starter in every way possible.

What are your career goals and plans? How did this experience impact them?

Upon graduation, I would like to work in the Market Research, Data Analytics or Business Insights department of a company as a Market Research Analyst. This experience was directly correlated to that goal. This internship taught me valuable analytic skills, how to use industry specific software, and gave me insights on how research is conducted by the top players of the industry. I feel like this experience has honed my skills and prepared me for a Market Research Analyst role upon graduation.
