Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer experience has taught me about the business relationships that a global bank has with multinational corporations. Throughout the past few weeks, I've developed a better understanding of the different products that a bank can offer companies in different industries in order to reach new markets, make their supply chains more efficient, or reduce their overall cost of operations.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This summer experience has allowed me to take the lessons I've learned since my freshman year as an undergrad into a real professional setting. By doing so, I've been able to refine many aspects of the work I deliver and understand how it can actually impact and contribute to a team of professionals.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

Since graduating from high school, I knew that I wanted to transition into a career in banking after completing my college career. After my first couple of semesters and many networking experiences, I realized that this idea wasn't enough because of the many roles available in the industry. After doing some research and talking to people who were already in banking, I realized that my quantitative and soft skills would allow me to comfortably transition into a career in Corporate Banking Coverage. This summer experience has confirmed that this is the role I want to pursue after finishing my studies at Penn State.

The classes that I've taken from the College of the Liberal Arts have not only allowed me to arrive at my summer internship with a vast understanding of both microeconomics and macroeconomics, but it has also allowed me to participate in thought-provoking conversations with managers and fellow interns. I believe that the strong focus by the College of the Liberal Arts to include real-world scenarios and examples in their classes has allowed me to do an even better job at my internship experience.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I had the opportunity to work as an undergraduate research assistant in the Cognitive Aging and Neuroimaging Lab under the guidance of principal investigator, Dr. Dennis. I assisted Psychology graduate students with their data collection and analysis. While most of my work could be accomplished remotely, I did have the opportunity to work in the lab on a regular basis.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This opportunity has enhanced my skills with data manipulation and furthered my understanding of excel. I have learned more about memory and brain imaging and I am excited to apply this knowledge to my Psychology coursework in the fall.

I was able to build relationships with driven and knowledgeable researchers in the field I am interested in that also serve as role models for my life after college. I know that if I decide to pursue a doctorate in Psychology, I will be able to obtain a personal letter of recommendation as well as assistance and guidance throughout the application process.

At the internship, I conducted legal and marketing research for attorneys and documented the information I found using memos, briefs, and PowerPoint presentations. I also attended virtual and in-person meetings and presentations.

After participating in this internship, I feel more driven to continue to succeed in school because I know exactly where I want to see myself in the future.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer, I was a virtual intern for the U.S. Embassy in Juba, South Sudan. Throughout the course of the internship, I was able to gain an understanding of how the offices in Washington, DC support missions abroad, and how the missions promote U.S. policy abroad and practice diplomacy. In my work with the Embassy, I was given projects that allowed me to hone my research, writing, and analysis skills as well as familiarize myself with the history of South Sudan and the complex political, economic, and social conflicts that face the nascent nation today.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience improved skills I use as a Liberal Arts student every day: reading, writing, research, analysis of complex situations, and problem solving. It also opened my eyes to a country that I had very little previous knowledge of and allowed me to dive deeply into the study of the history and current events of South Sudan.

This experience opened my eyes to what a career with the U.S. Department of State might look like and exposed me to the various different careers within the Department, spanning various bureaus and countries. It solidified for me that I want to pursue a career in which I am able to serve others.

The College of Liberal Arts was integral in my ability to complete this internship, as it was unpaid. The enrichment funds I received allowed me to accept the internship and have the amazing experience that I did! Without this support, I might have chosen a different experience that was not unpaid.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

While I was in Wyoming, I had the opportunity to teach the public about dinosaurs and work in an active dig site. We constantly found dinosaur bones in the Morrison Formation (roughly 148 million years ago) of Camarasaurus and Allosaurus. My biggest discovery among the countless ribs and vertebra was a femur the size of my leg. We were able to uncover it and remove it from the matrix (rock), a process which usually takes years, but it only took us a few weeks.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience taught me how important it is to reach into other fields and learn from them. I have loved dinosaurs my whole life, but I never would have considered myself a Paleontologist. After this internship, I can now say I am more certified than many others in the profession. It also taught me how communication between passionate people can further your own passions.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience taught me that I love working with the public academically, meaning working in areas where I get to talk with the public about the stuff I love while teaching them new information about their interests.

I heard about the internship through an email sent out by the Liberal Arts advisors and I was instantly interested.

The Paterno Fellows program has taught me a lot throughout my time at PSU, but one of the biggest things is always asking questions if you don't know and to always search for the answer.

At City Relief, I was tasked with helping expand the social outreach of the nonprofit. I successfully pitched the production of short-form video content for Instagram Reels and was tasked with spearheading the transition. I also worked on a long-term project to highlight and depict the volunteer experience for new volunteers within the organization. I also worked in Adobe Lightroom to edit images for social media.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience has expanded my understanding of the world of digital content and given me insider insight into what Communication majors might do in a professional capacity.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

​​​I was able to pioneer the social transition to Instagram reels while simultaneously working on a long-term project to highlight and depict the volunteer experience for new volunteers in the organization. This experience not only allowed me to become comfortable using Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Lightroom, but it also helped me hone my skills for pitching ideas, creating content from scratch, and working simultaneously on long-term and short-term projects.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

The College of Liberal Arts gave me enrichment funds, which helped me pay for food, train travel to work, and some of my housing. Without those funds, the experience would have been much more challenging to attain.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows program has taught me to continuously push myself to do better than my best. For the video editing project, I worked really hard to present work that wasn't just good, but that I put time and effort into and was really proud of.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I shadowed the lead detective for Cumberland County, John Mays. We conferred with the DA's office often and investigated anything that they asked us to. I spent time with every detective that I worked with and got to understand their specific role, since each of them specialized in different types of cases. Outside of detective work, I was also able to sit in on different types of courts, including a homicide trial, miscellaneous court, MDJ hearings, and Together Optimizing Mental Health Solutions (TOMS) court.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, I feel that this internship has prepared me for the upper-level Criminology and Sociology classes that I will take. Having hands-on experience in the criminal justice and criminal law world will allow me to better understand advanced theories as well as apply them to real life. I did most of my general education courses during my first and second years, meaning my last two years will involve mostly major classes. This internship helped me get hands-on experience that I can apply to those courses.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

A large part of my goals for this internship was to be exposed to as many different areas in the criminal justice field as possible. I feel that I met that goal and then some. I spent days with the District Attorney's Office, Pennsylvania State Police, probation, victim services, the sheriff's office, and in the forensic lab. After those experiences, I have a better idea of what I am most interested in and would like to pursue once I graduate from Penn State.

I applied for this internship separate from the College of the Liberal Arts, but once I found out that it was going to be unpaid, I realized that I needed financial help to be able to participate in it. I asked my advisor, Heather Corley, about any financial opportunities that Penn State or the College of the Liberal Arts offered and she directed me to the Career Enrichment Network. It was there that I found the opportunity to gain funding for this experience. I was also selected for another grant specifically from the Department of Sociology and Criminology.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I had the remarkable experience of serving in the Department of Treasury this summer. In the OCC, I was assigned to Large Bank Supervision, specifically for Fifth Third. I was able to assist national bank examiners to: issue banking rules and regulations, impose corrective measures following a lack of compliance with laws and regulations, and to ultimately protect consumers by making sure banks give fair access and equal treatment to customers and comply with consumer banking laws. Furthermore, in Large Bank Supervision, I was able to develop a close understanding of the banks' risk taking and risk management, identify the most significant risks, and determine the adequacy of bank systems and controls to measure, monitor, and manage these risk through the mentorship of a variety of OCC employees.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience allowed me to utilize my skills derived from my Liberal Arts background in more ways than I could imagine. In Dean Lang's speech to my class freshmen year, he iterated the value of a Liberal Arts degree as "all-encompassing." I felt that working at the Department of Treasury this summer, which is typically inundated with business majors. From my classes within the College of the Liberal Arts, I utilized analytical and critical-thinking skills to complete assignments that involved some degree of business knowledge as well as general reports that I would have to write for the team. I have become a more versatile learner and worker as a result.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience has reaffirmed my commitment to serving the United States via public service. It is rewarding work that directly benefits the lives of Americans, and it's a sphere that I want nothing more than to be a part of. I can say with absolute certainty that I want to work within the federal government at some capacity after graduation, to truly better the lives of others.

The College of the Liberal Arts provided me with a network of career mentors that helped me strengthen my resume for the federal sphere as well as enrichment funding to be able to support myself this summer. I could not have pursued this opportunity without the College's support.

Paterno Fellows has prepared me for the rigor of government work through pushing me to the utmost of academic achievement, and through honors courses and seminars. Paterno Fellows gave me the funding that I needed to continue with this opportunity.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

During this internship, I wrote the content for the Jewish Cultural Historical Museum's new website on the two Jewish cemeteries on the island of Curaçao. Currently, I am in the process of creating a database that will contain all of the gravesites at the previously mentioned cemeteries. Also, thanks to Penn State, I was able to travel to Willemstad, Curaçao, for two weeks to see these cemeteries in person, as well as meet my supervisors and the other intern.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience helped me better understand cultural differences in the world regarding religion and language. It was enriching to be immersed in a different culture and learn how social and political aspects vary from country to country. Moreover, this experience greatly impacted my writing skills. Most of my writing has been strictly academic, but creating website content helped me better understand search engine optimization. Also, being introduced to such knowledgeable writers helped me improve my own writing skills.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience allowed me to gain a glimpse into what a museum related career would look like. Pursuing an education in a history related field, I feel that it's important to learn more about museum careers, so this experience opened my eyes to the advertisement and online presence museums must hold in the 21st century. Also, my supervisor has a background in politics and international relations, which allowed me to learn more about a career in that field.

Without being a College of the Liberal Arts student, I would never have learned about this experience. I was introduced to the internship through a friend in the Liberal Arts Ambassadors, and she was introduced to the internship through a Liberal Arts faculty member. Furthermore, the College of the Liberal Arts has helped me build upon my education to be able to succeed in this internship. Through the College, I was able to obtain a research assistant position in which I code data and create databases. This aided me in being able to take my internship a step further and create the cemetery database.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program provided funds to allow me to have an in person component to this experience. For that, I am extremely grateful.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Interning with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council (PEC) this summer was an incredibly fulfilling experience. Though I started virtually, I was able to gradually return to an in person work experience which was challenging, but a great learning experience. I met so many great people and gained plenty of new skills. Above all, I enjoyed the work that I did and I felt very accomplished.

How did this experience impact you academically?

It was really interesting to finally apply much of my academic background to a real-world professional setting. However, the experience also opened my eyes to the reality that no matter how hard or long you study, nothing will prepare you entirely for a position. As I continue my academic studies, I will keep this in mind and possibly apply my knowledge and creative and abstract thinking.

The internship was not in the exact field that I was planning to work in upon graduation, so I was skeptical. I now have a different attitude towards my future plans. While I still have some idea of what direction I want to head, I am more open-minded about future options and truly believe that I could be happy and fulfilled in many different settings.

My Liberal Arts academic advisor encouraged me to pursue the City Semester Pittsburgh program, which led to my internship. The whole staff has also been incredibly helpful in getting me in the necessary classes to apply my internship to my academic goals.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer, I communicated with Congressman Fitzpatrick's constituency on a daily basis, worked with Federal Agencies to solve the public's problems, worked with fellow interns and office staff who handle casework to provide accurate and fast solutions for the public, cooperated with Federal institutions, such as the IRS, Selective Service, etc., and performed Ad Hoc. analysis (EX: Utilizing software such as Internet Quorum) on regional issues and concerns within the Congressman's district. I also interacted with office staff, the Congressman himself, and other interns on a daily basis in his Langhorne district office.

"With a German minor, I have the unique opportunity to take my language skills and use them to help the Congressman's staff when working with the large German-American population who live in Bucks County."

How did this experience impact you academically?

As a Political Science major, I have been enrolled in classes taught by Gregory Kruczek (PLSC 420), Bumba Mukherjee (PLSC 436), Vineeta Yadav (PLSC 453), and Jim Piazza (PLSC 14). However, Political Science classes are theory-based and rarely offer students the chance to apply concepts to domestic affairs. For example, the state expands through the bureaucracy and must extract resources from the population, in the form of taxes, to fund the bureaucracy. When handling casework regarding IRS tax codes, I can apply this state-building concept and see how the United States funds its bureaucracy and services offered to its citizens. With a German minor, I have the unique opportunity to take my language skills and use them to help the Congressman's staff when working with the large German-American population who live in Bucks County.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience will provide me with the knowledge of how I want to shape my future career, and give me a game plan to obtain my future goals. In the future, I want to work for a Senator and act as either a policy analyst or legislative assistant in order to see how certain policies would benefit or hurt the people we serve, and help form/recommend policies that benefit the constituency. However, after serving as an intern for Congressman Fitzpatrick and handling casework for the people he represents, I could realize I absolutely hate that and never want to do it again. From there, I can reconsider how I can best serve my community - whether that be as a news correspondent, who provides accurate descriptions and reports about events and bills, or working for a lobbying firm to best voice the concerns of the people.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

With one of my parents being unemployed, budget constraints surfaced and impacted my college education. As such, my family and I have faced financial hardships and uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic. By applying to have the Career Enrichment Network fund this experience, I was able to prosper and thrive at my summer internship by having travel and technology expenses paid for.

I was able to study terrorism from a European perspective for three weeks and the Vikings for four weeks in Copenhagen, Denmark. I traveled to many relevant sites for both courses.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My study abroad program allowed me to experience new learning styles and methods, while interacting with relevant people and places that otherwise would have been inaccessible.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This educational experience solidified my love of politics and history. It also gave me a desire to study abroad more and immerse myself in my studies through foreign culture, travel, and research.

Without the push from the Paterno Fellows Program, I likely would not have sought out this education abroad experience. The drive to gain international perspectives helped me to seek out an experience, despite the difficult circumstances the world is in.

I examined the past writings of W.E.B Du Bois in order to locate references he made to the classical world. I reported this information to my mentor, Dr. Mathias Hanses, in order to assist him with his research.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience helped me to develop several important academic skills. I was able to improve the speed with which I could read large amounts of text, which will undoubtedly prove useful in my academic life. It also taught me how to best manage my time in order to succeed academically. Finally, this internship introduced me to a new way in which CAMS can be applied to my studies.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to intern at McLean through the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Summer Research Internship Program. I worked on multiple projects, but mainly ones that investigated the intersections of substance use, mental health, and the recovery process. I was also given access to world-class seminars that advanced my knowledge on substance use, both medically and psychologically. My most challenging task, however, was working on data extraction for a literature review on buprenorphine maintenance. Lastly, I learned some more technical skills such as creating REDCAP projects, the system that McLean uses to survey research.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, this experience has helped me to think more critically. I deeply appreciated how Dr. McHugh would always probe our answers. The expectation of being able to backup our answers challenged me to think more deeply before providing an answer. This translates into me providing more well thought out responses, whether it is on a test or in a lab report.

Although my intentions are still to go to medical school or physician assistant school, I have discovered a love and interest for research. After completing my undergrad, I plan to work as a research assistant while going through the graduate school application process.

I would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Emma Rose, she is my current PI and she took her time to mentor me through the application process. Without her input and guidance over the years, whether it was challenging me through our research project at PSU or helping me with my CV, this internship would not have been possible. I would like to give another thanks to Dr. Jason Whitney who has also given me ample opportunities for professional development that has made me a good candidate. The funds gifted to me through the Career Enrichment Network also allowed me to focus on what was important rather than worrying about finances and work over the summer. My experience with Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) was focused on the defense of free speech, due process, and civil liberties for college students, staff, and faculty across national college campuses.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience required me to formulate a comprehensive understanding of First Amendment case law through a wide analysis of legislated statutes, specific campus policies, and landmark Supreme Court cases. This has provided me with a clear understanding of the legal underpinnings grounding university policies on student conduct procedures. Further, this internship provided a class-applicable understanding of the laws that enable our democratic process.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience solidified my intent to attend law school post-graduation. Following this experience, I will pursue a career in public-interest litigation or criminal defense.

The enrichment funds that I received enabled me to cover the expenses of relocating for this internship. My move from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia was filled with ample stress and anxieties; the funding supplied by the College of the Liberal Arts ensured that cost was not one of those worries.

In the Summer of 2021, I worked as a Research Assistant for Dr. Michael Gechter in the Department of Economics at Penn State. Specifically, I contributed to Dr. Gechter's current research on how environmental firm relocation policy in Delhi, India, affects workers, firms, and air pollution. I also helped create datasets for Dr. Gechter's research on meta-analysis of micro-credit finance programs. My work involved geocoding the locations of relevant amenities in Delhi's Industrial Areas, reading through academic studies on micro-credit finance programs, and writing scripts in R and Python to automate geospatial data processes.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience allowed me to explore different areas of economics, specifically development economics. Prior to this experience, I was considering applying to graduate programs that exclusively focused on environmental economics. While working for Dr. Gechter, I read a number of academic papers on conditional cash transfers and other policies aimed at increasing school enrollment rates. These papers, as well as others focusing on microfinance policies, gave me a new understanding of how economists are analyzing important policies in developing countries. As I gained a deeper understanding of development economics, I decided to enroll in ECON 471 - Growth and Development Economics - in Fall 2021.

Working on these research projects also led me to rethink my plan of only applying to environmental economics graduate programs. Currently, I’m in the process of applying to graduate programs for all areas of economics and I have tentative plans to specialize in development economics as well as environmental economics.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Working for Wareham Gatemen rewarded me with knowledge, skills, and fond memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. When attending a game or practice six days a week, my duties consisted of running commonly used baseball data collecting technology, which ranged from motion sensors, ball trackers, to video cameras, as well as charting pitcher velocities, spin rates, and tendencies. I also scouted individual players using the professional grading scale and participated in traditional field maintenance.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, my internship provided real world data to analyze and interpret. With the use of data capturing technology, I effectively gathered and subsequently translated raw numbers into tangible information that players and coaches could better understand and utilize. I further developed collaboration, teamwork, and presentation skills that translated into the classroom setting when working on projects or in teams. In completing scouting reports, my writing improved and become more concise.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

In mimicking entry-level baseball positions with MLB teams, my internship provided invaluable experience in running common technologies seen around professional baseball. In addition, learning the cadence of report writing, and subsequently producing reports, I have a foundation in which to build upon and use to gain an advantage in the competitive hiring process. The experience also introduced me to people working in pro baseball that will act as mentors and advisors for entering the baseball world and maintaining my career there.

Enrichment funds from the college of Liberal Arts were a key piece in making the experience happen. Since the position was unpaid and far from home, I am grateful that it was possible to utilize funding to lower the tremendous costs associated with living in a popular and expensive area for the summer.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I facilitated weekly meetings with an international cohort of 10 youths to analyze complex social and environmental issues. My goal was to cultivate an international network of youths with a curiosity for solving problems in both local and global spheres. Our team established a mentorship program with workshops that empowered storytellers to identify and develop their skills related to professionalism, communication, and confidence. We also developed partnerships with organizations to discuss future plans, structural challenges, and technological tools that could improve project operations. Throughout the summer, I implemented community-building activities to foster positive relationships in a collaborative setting.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This project enhanced my skills related to time-management, group dynamics, leadership, and communication. Developing the digital magazine and mentorship program required hours of work each week. I had to balance my commitments and ensure that I had enough time to invest in the project. My project also taught me how to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a respectful and productive manner. These skills are essential in academic settings, especially when dealing with collaborative work.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience met my expectations for personal growth and professional readiness. It taught me about group dynamics since I had the opportunity to interact regularly with twelve storytellers from across the globe. We took part in weekly video calls to build rapport, plan deliverables, and delegate tasks. These meetings necessitated awareness, adaptability, and shared motivation in order to foster a strong team connection. I had to be observant and proactive in order to assess the needs of the group and guide them throughout the summer. This project reaffirmed my desire to work in a multicultural, energetic environment.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Over the course of 14 weeks, I interned with the Penn State Office of Investment Management along with Jacqueline Saleeby. We researched the integration of ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) practices across the investment industry and recommended potential strategies for inclusion in the investment office’s investment process. I performed competitive analysis on various investment institutions to determine Penn State's standing and potential for improvement. My daily tasks included building an excel database, utilizing PowerPoint, writing reports, and communicating with my team. Our final presentation turned observational research into actionable recommendations.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Throughout this internship, I benefitted immensely from education on investment principals and learning how industry participants govern themselves. Working within Penn State's Office of Investment Management gave me insight on office dynamics, communications, and team project management. I benefitted from balancing independent work and collaboration/feedback from my intern team to achieve optimal results. I was also offered the opportunity to perform additional work for the investment office in the Fall 2021 semester, where I will get to diversify my work experience.

This internship ended up changing my future career path by giving me a new interest in the financial field. I found the information to be exciting and the projects held importance. Gaining this internship created technical work experience on my resume which will open new career paths for me in the financial field. I am so grateful that my manager, Joseph Cullen, who recognized my potential for this internship opportunity. It was truly a kickstart to my career.

I interned with a boutique investment banking known as FT Partners which focuses on financial technology companies. I was responsible for crafting client presentations, creating financial models, and performing data analysis. I worked virtually for most of the summer but was able to travel out to San Francisco and see the office for the last week!

How did this experience impact you academically?

The internship gave me a practical experience of many of the concepts and principals that I have studied throughout my Penn State career. In particular, I was able to apply lessons about principles of business and addressing markets that I learned from my economics and finance classes. My experience this summer will motivate me to continue my study in these area because of its confirmation of my interest in these domains.

I plan to return full-time to FT Partners to continue working in their investment banking division. This internship showed me that I can be comfortable in finance and banking roles and confirmed that this is my desired career path. The in-person portion of the experience, although short, was invaluable as it gave me a look in at the typical form of the industry.

During my internship, I was able to learn about any and all tasks of the Sheriff's Office within law enforcement. I was responsible for the collection and preservation of evidence on scene and in the lab, I worked with firearms, narcotics, fingerprints, and K-9 interdiction. I was also able to work within the jail, property rooms, forensic interviews, and patrol.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I got to see and experience processes I had only ever read about in class. I was able to learn from those in the field with a lot of experience, and eventually able to perform these processes myself. This internship was incredibly hands-on and has provided me with an insider perspective on criminal science and law enforcement procedures.

This experience has set me up with a base of knowledge of law enforcement and crime scene processes that I know I will constantly be able to refer to and draw from throughout my future in this field. This summer, I was an intern for the U.S. Department of State in the Global Engagement Center's Network Engagement & Training Cell. I had the opportunity to sit in on meetings about countering propaganda and disinformation, assist with projects, and write/edit the Weekly Activity Report (WAR) that updates personnel on the progress of ongoing projects each week. Additionally, I worked on the Cell's Influencer Network Mapping Project to help visualize civil society influencers and foreign government communicators that advance local/regional priorities for countering propaganda and disinformation.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I have been able to experience foreign policy in action during this internship. I have been writing my honors thesis on public diplomacy effectiveness and this internship allowed me to interact with officials who actively engage and practice public diplomacy.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

After graduating in December, I plan to pursue a career working with the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer. This experience has helped me learn the skills necessary to successfully pursue this career.

As a Marketing and Promotions Intern with Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, I assist the marketing department's full-time staff in carrying out unique fan engagement experiences. This internship allows me to interact with the players, coaches, and fans of all 31 Varsity Athletic programs at Penn State. Some of my most memorable experiences thus far include serving as the Director of Sound Operations for the 2021 PIAA Softball State Championships and being the public address announcer for the Penn State Swimming and Diving Teams.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship was a great way for me to both save time and achieve academic credit for my internship. I was able to use my internship with Penn State Athletics to satisfy 3 credits of 400-level classes for the Communication Arts and Sciences major. The supplemental work required to achieve academic credit was a great way to reflect on my experience while simultaneously improving my resume, networking strategies, and more!

This internship with Penn State Athletics will allow me to gain a deeper understanding of the sports industry. I have taken advantage of the professional staff I work with to network with sports business professionals both at Penn State and other institutions. After my time at Penn State, I plan to attend graduate school and receive my master's degree in Sport Management or Business Administration. I want to do this free of cost by taking advantage of a campus recreation or athletics graduate assistantship program.

Through the generous assistance of a Liberal Arts donor, I was able to receive enrichment funds for my otherwise unpaid internship experience. This funding has helped me pay for tuition and other college expenses. I want to give special recognition to my Liberal Arts internship advisor, Dr. Miraldi, as he has been a great help throughout my internship process. Dr. Miraldi has been a great resource in helping me apply for funding, answering all my questions, and giving me advice along the way.

As an intern for SportimeNY, I assisted the club’s General Managers with a variety of club management tasks and tennis programs. I managed sales, accounting, budgeting, office coverage, pro shop administration. I provided help to the administration with tennis programs and camps and of special events including tournaments, charity fundraisers, leagues, and tennis mixers. I also presented a professional appearance and attitude at all times, maintaining excellent standard of customer service

How did this experience impact you academically?

It made me more aware of certain models which I am currently learning in my economics courses such as ECON 444, which is focused on corporations and how they operate. Having this internship gave me first hand experience of these models and allowed me to apply them to real world scenarios.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

The Research-to-Policy Collaboration (RPC) bridges the gap between researchers and public officials to create and effectively implement evidence-based policy. The RPC takes a non-partisan, educational approach to improve science communication and strengthen relationships between researchers and policymakers. As an intern, I created and managed data to compile a recruitment list for our messaging trials. Also, I managed the RPC Twitter and analyzed website optimization techniques to better understand user engagement on the RPC website platform.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience grew my research skills. It allowed me to use Excel and R to compile and analyze data pertaining to our messaging trials and research enrollment and website optimization. I gained valuable knowledge to communicate with researchers and policymakers through analyzing their interactions with emails and our website. Simultaneously, I was able to manage data pertaining to the expertise fields of the researchers in our network. Along with these statistics-based skills, I was able to diversify my work experience and collaborate with professionals who provided me with beneficial feedback. Working independently and in a remote-based team allowed me to learn more about my own work style and how I communicate with my colleagues.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

The RPC taught me the importance of evidence-based policy. Prior to this internship, I had an interest in policy making and wanted to learn more about the process of implementing policies. I still hold that interest, but I now recognize the importance of utilizing science and evidence to create policies, while making the science easy to communicate. I also gained an interest in policy analysis; understanding who a policy benefits and conducting analyses to assess its affect is important in the policy process. In the future, I strive to expand upon these research skills and utilize them in a research center or think tank that will implement evidence-based, communicable policies.

Through attending congressional hearings, drafting memos, participating in company meetings, and tracking the development of new policies, I was able to gain invaluable experience as a young professional.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience challenged me to allocate time in my day to not only complete the tasks assigned, but also dedicate more time to my studies. Many of my classes pertain to the political world and public office, and this internship experience urged me to delve deeper into these subjects. Additionally, this experience challenged me to balance my academic workload and internship. The ability to balance these responsibilities tested me as an individual, but has ultimately made me into a harder worker.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I am a remote intern in the Office of Europe in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRl/EUR). In my position, I have a lot of varying responsibilities: I have served as an editor on the Department’s yearly Human Rights Reports for Monaco, Luxembourg, North Cyprus, Romania, and Belarus, researched the conduct of specific human rights abusers and drafted summaries to better inform the legal bureau’s decision making, drafted briefs and memos for diplomatic meetings, and assisted in analyzing Interpol notices for potential political motivations. I also attend daily office meetings, where my office discusses ongoing initiatives.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience has been very informative as to which academic skills will be the most useful in the workplace. I have learned how to write more concisely, which is necessary for drafting internal department documents. I also feel I have become a more efficient worker, as the majority of my deadlines at my internship are within 48 hours of being assigned. Finally, this internship has been extremely informative for what to prepare for after graduation. I understand the application and hiring process at the State Department much better now, and thus will be able to apply more effectively.

This internship has solidified my interest in pursuing a career in the civil service, particularly in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. The type of work I have been doing in my position and the topics it focuses on align with both my academic and personal interests. I have had the opportunity to use my language studies and my major focus every day, and I would like to continue this kind of work after graduation.

The College of the Liberal Arts has served as a gateway to many of my opportunities. I have been fortunate enough to have a Liberal Arts Mentor, Joe Dethomas, who worked at the State Department, and was an invaluable resource in attaining my position. Additionally, the College of the Liberal Arts was the resource that drew my attention to my favorite language experiences, such as STARTALK, FLAS and Middlebury. Without these experiences, I would never have learned about my passion for Russian, which is a core component of my work at the State Department.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Through this experience, I have gained a variety of experience in the entertainment industry. From working directly with producers and seasoned artists in the field, to assisting with an iHeart Radio artist mixer, to putting my personal touch on decorating the studio, I have never had so much artistic freedom and support in exploring a passion of mine. In working directly with the artists and management of the studio, I’ve been given the opportunity to pursue every idea that I’ve had—even building a new merchandise line for their band. This opportunity truly is unlike anything that I’ve ever done before.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I have had experiences that I would’ve never gotten in the classroom. As an undergraduate research assistant in a Psychology lab, I’ve gained extensive knowledge on how to analyze trends and collect data to examine a population. As an intern, I’ve been able to utilize these skills outside of a developmental Psychology lens by analyzing music industry trends to build a stronger brand for artists in the studio. While utilizing these skills, I’ve also gained more creative skills in graphic design and digital marketing, which are not part of my academic curriculum.

This internship has broadened the scope of what careers I could pursue in the future and has given me the confidence to explore past typical careers in academia. Stepping outside of the academic realm to learn skills such as graphic design, lighting production, and digital marketing has not only expanded my marketable abilities, but has also given me an opportunity to network with producers and artists in an industry that I’ve always wanted to pursue. The connections that I’ve made during my internship will assist me in continuing my passion for music within the industry.

The College of the Liberal Arts has helped me just by simply allowing me to enroll in their internship experience class. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

As a research assistant in Professor Warshel's lab, I conduct literature reviews studying children's agency during conflict and peace-building processes. I have been reading literature that examines the intersectionality of gender and age, looking at how young women are excluded from the peace-building process and how young men are excluded from resources as refugees and migrants because they are perceived and portrayed as violent.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience has helped me to develop strong academic writing and analytical skills. Additionally, the collaborative component of the lab has enhanced my communication skills as I have to share the research I have conducted with other lab members and vice versa. This allows us to then see in what ways our literature may intersect.

In the future, I would like to work towards protecting the rights of refugees and immigrants globally. The research I have conducted with Professor Warshel has brought to my attention the experiences of some of the most invisible groups in conflict zones - like children, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. It has also highlighted the importance of community-based organizations in the peace-building process and the criticalness of ensuring all voices are participating in the peace-building process, including children who are often considered victims as opposed to active members of society cable of enacting change.

The College of the Liberal Arts has provided me with endless help to support my experience, from enrichment funds to courses that have prepared me to work in an academic setting. I have also been supported by my advisors and professors, who have encouraged me to pursue research.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program encourages and supports its students to participate in all sectors of the university, from coursework to extracurriculars, community service, and research and/or internship experiences. This support has pushed me to take advantage of the experiences available at the university, such as research. Additionally, the coursework I have completed for my honors thesis has prepared me with the necessary skills to work as a research assistant.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

At New Leaf Initiative, I have been able to conduct testimonial emails to past/current members, create social media posts that motivate people to take a break from work, relax, and come into New Leaf for a change of scenery during their remote workdays. I also open the workspace almost every morning, which consists of me watering plants, introducing myself to new members and other members to each other, and scheduling my supervisor and I's to-do list for the week. During my time so far, I have been a part of two events we have hosted, one including a Women In Business Club meeting for a mental health check-in, which introduced me to businesswomen and gave me insight into my potential future. The second event was a co-working/business convention, which focused on group activities that can improve the work we are currently in and the impact it has on the world.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience has improved my time management/organizational skills and professionalism. My supervisor asks me to use a website called Basecamp to handle our schedules for each week. This helped me stay on top of assignments by giving myself specific deadlines to complete my projects. Since we have hosted our Women in Business event and co-working/business convention, I was asked to speak to various participants in a professional manner. Because I am a CAS major, I am asked to do a lot of public speaking for many of my classes. Being that I've practiced speaking to a number of businessmen and women, I have learned to use my voice in a professional manner and developed interpersonal skills that help gain the audience's attention during a presentation. I have already had two presentations just this semester and because of this experience, they went fluently.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience will expand my knowledge of the world of communications and the artistic industry. I am interested in pursuing a career in the music industry, so interning at a workspace that is welcoming to people of all occupations, I have been able to meet a variety of people who have given me an insight into their own worlds. I also have been able to get an idea of what it would be like to manage a social media account and challenge my creativity throughout this internship, which I think really helped open my mind up to different possibilities of art.

The Liberal Arts Alumni Mentor program has been a huge part of how I got this internship. Two years ago I was lost and confused until I asked my advisor, Mia Parise, how she could help. She led me over to Lauren Granese's profile where I was able to set up meetings with her and was introduced to this program. I met my alumni mentor, Emily Fisher, and since then, Emily has been a big help to me. She has always been there for support, questions, and any time I'm in need of career advice. I wouldn't have found this internship without Emily's guidance and for that, I will forever be grateful for her.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I am studying abroad in Paris, France in IES's language immersion program. All of the classes and communication are entirely in French, with the ultimate goal of approaching some degree of fluency. I am taking classes about the French language, translation, French film, and French art. I am also taking a class in aesthetics at the Sorbonne.

How did this experience impact you academically?

The French academic system is quite different from that of the United States, and it has been enlightening to gain a different perspective on the educational process and my own scholastic life. The French university system, grading standards, classroom expectations, and student-professor relationship were entirely new to me, and I'd like to think that I am now a more well-rounded and international student.

While I am certainly not fluent, I can now consistently hold conversations in French with native French speakers. My French has vastly improved over the course of the semester. Studying abroad will open up many francophone career paths to me that were wholly closed off beforehand. For example, upon graduating, I plan to teach English in a francophone country.

After working as a research assistant in the Cognitive Aging and Neuroimaging lab over the summer, I was thrilled to come back for in-person work in the Fall. Under the guidance of Principal Investigator, Dr. Dennis, and the graduate students in the lab, I have had an active role in each step of the process from scheduling to testing the participants, as well as data collection and analysis.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This opportunity has enhanced my skills with data manipulation and furthered my understanding of excel. I am learning valuable analytical skills, as well as interpersonal skills by communicating with and working with a large variety of people in our studies. I have learned more about memory and brain imaging and I am excited to apply this knowledge to my Psychology coursework.

Stick to Change is a youth-led, global organization that promotes racial and social equity. Their digital platform shares content such as articles, art, and videos produced by youth to inspire other young activists to take action in their local communities. As an intern, I write and edit articles for them, ultimately raising awareness about important issues around the world.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Working with Stick to Change will be an incredible opportunity for me to expand my knowledge in newswriting and communications, as well as social justice, both important for a career in the humanitarian field. I believe that Stick to Change will help me gain experience with writing, social media, multicultural knowledge, experience working with people from different backgrounds, and global understanding.

I will be acting as a writer and editor to Stick to Change. As a writer, I will gain more experience writing on a deadline, researching, and crafting articles. While working as an editor, I will be able to get experience in revising, finding mistakes and faulty points within publications, and I will be more knowledgeable about issues around the world while reading what other students from all over the world find important. Both positions will allow me to grow in this field I love so much.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I am currently in the process of completing my thesis for the Schreyer Honors College (SHC) at Penn State University. My thesis is entitled "The Impact of Virtual Work on Organizational Socialization Processes Among Employees". Since the option to work virtually heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic, I intend to explore how employees are handling the transition of work to an online context and what initiatives companies should implement to better integrate their workforce. To gather data on this topic, I will be conducting interviews with college students who have previous or current virtual work experience.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience of conducting research allows me to demonstrate a command of my subject matter, along with strengthening my written, analytical, and critical thinking skills. The information I collect from my study will be used to substantiate my honors thesis. I feel fortunate to be able to make this scholastic contribution in the final year of my college education. Upon the completion of my research and thesis, I have will have a deliverable to show future employers.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This research experience has allowed me to explore a topic of interest to me. I hope to bring this passion for improving the workplace into my career as an HR practitioner. I believe the information uncovered in this study will be applicable throughout my career as more jobs become remote. I think it is important to understand how employees are identifying, or not identifying, with their organization while working from a distance. By learning how employees are adjusting to virtual work, companies can provide better support to their workforce in return. I hope to eventually take what I have gained from this experience to help organizations assimilate their remote workers and enhance this "new workplace.”

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

The enrichment funding I received from the College of the Liberal Arts will be used to purchase Starbucks Gift Cards as a thank-you to the participants in my research study. Having this incentive to offer will help me to recruit subjects for my study, which improves the size of my participant pool and the quality of my data. The scale of my research would not be possible without support from the College of the Liberal Arts. My advisor, Dr. Dorothea Roumpi, has also been a great support to me throughout the research process. She has played a critical role in the development and direction of my thesis. The enrichment funding and guidance from my advisor have both helped me to succeed in this research experience.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program has been an invaluable resource to me throughout my time at Penn State. I credit many of my past and future accomplishments to this program. It has challenged me to reach my fullest potential and encouraged me to remain a life-long learner.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

While studying abroad, I took art history classes and an intensive Italian language course. My art history classes had a field study component where our class was held on archeology sites, ancient monuments, museums, and churches. IES Rome held extracurricular sessions once a week after classes to teach students about Italian culture. My favorite sessions I participated in were the pasta making class and oil olive tasting. Rome is filled with beautiful art and delicious food and has been a wonderful city to live in.

How did this experience impact you academically?

As an art history major, I was able to see in person the art and cultures I have studied in my classes. Rome has amazing art museums, and I have been able to view artworks I would never have been able to see in the United States. I have had the opportunities to travel throughout Italy to visit the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Last Supper in Milan, and the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

Spending the semester surrounded by the art and history of Rome helped me decide that I want to pursue a master’s degree in art history. Graduate school for art history requires students to be proficient in a language, and living in Italy has significantly improved my Italian language skills. In the future, I would like to work in a museum. Visiting museums has given me insight on how Italy and Europe communicate art and its historical context.

The College of the Liberal Arts was extremely helpful with the process of studying abroad. My academic advisers helped me with planning what classes I should take and how the credits would transfer back to Penn State. I also received funding from the Career Enrichment Network. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I served as a finance intern during Summer 2021 for iA, a company providing pharmacy fulfillment solutions for central fill and retail facilities that is powered by modular automation hardware, as well as iA's enterprise pharmacy fulfillment software, NEXiA. In my role over the summer, I had the opportunity to focus on a customer-centric project. This project allowed me to meet with team members from all of the company's various departments to take a detailed dive into departmental systems, processes, and operations. I also collaborated with iA's other interns to present a case study to executive leadership. My time at iA has allowed me to grow professionally and personally in ways I never imagined. I gained skills and experience in writing SQL queries, using business intelligence tools, creating financial reports, and developing my business acumen. I was fortunate enough to accept a position as a financial operations associate with iA for the academic year.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My time at iA has impacted me academically by allowing me to focus my coursework towards the topics most prevalent in my role, as well as finetune my skills in prominent business technologies and tools. Prior to last summer, I knew I was passionate for economics and finance, but lacked a clear direction to navigate towards academically. Now, I feel like I have a robust understanding of what I hope to achieve professionally and how I define my success, which I have used to make more informed decisions in my course selection and extracurricular activities.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

My time at iA has allowed me to learn my strengths, weaknesses, and interests career-wise, and has played a defining role in formulating what I hope to achieve professionally in the future. The experience has shown me how to leverage my academic opportunities as a Penn State student, as well as provided me with a career direction to aspire to. I now try to relate my economics coursework to industrial organization, accounting, and financial planning and analysis, but prior to my internship with iA, I had little to no concept of my direct interest in these fields.

The liberal arts mentorship program and my mentor have made the difference in helping me garner and succeed in my role at iA. Before working with my mentor, I struggled to possess the confidence necessary to support my experiences, extracurriculars, and academic background. He made the effort to meet with me weekly during application seasons, and gave me the tools I needed to be successful in the business world. Prior to my first interview at iA, my mentor and I worked for hours together to finetune my resume, cover letter, and most importantly, take a deep dive into iA, ensuring I was prepared to succeed in my interview.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I served as a benefits coordinator at Brian Patten Associates over the spring semester of 2022. This company focuses on making sure our consumers have the correct supplementary insurance coverage for all their needs. Through out my role as a benefits coordinator, I have studied and passed my life, health and accident insurance exam. By completing this course I am now able to help sell insurance to different companies across the state of Pennsylvania. During this time, Brian Patten Associates has also created a new training course for new employees. It was my responsibility to complete the training and give my feedback. Throughout the numerous different courses, I would offer my feedback about what I thought was useful and what needed to be improved upon as they continue to update the process. Working with Brian Patten Associates has been a great opportunity for me to help improve the company, but learn so many useful skills as I continue to enroll people with insurance.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience has impacted me academically by giving me a sense of the world after college. I had the opportunity to graduate from Penn State a semester early, but I would have not remained eligible for the 2022 lacrosse season. Having this internship experience has helped me guide my thoughts on what I want to pursue after college while also continuing to participate on the Penn State lacrosse team. At times it has been tough to balance an internship and lacrosse, but Brian Patten Associates has been incredibly flexible with my practice and game schedule. This internship has helped me use the skills I have picked up as a communication arts and science major as I assist others with their insurance needs.

The College of the Liberal Arts has helped me significantly find and succeed in my experience. One of my communication professors, Micheal Steudeman, was a fantastic mentor helping me with all my paperwork and guiding me throughout the process. With his knowledge and guidance, he directed me to the right people and helped get everything in order to help set me up for success in the spring semester of 2022.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program helped me greatly in preparation for this internship experience at Brian Patten Associates. My mentor helped me with my extra curricular activities and paperwork. My mentor also helped me create a weekly study guide to make sure I was on top of my life, health, and accident insurance exam that I had studied for over a month. I ended up passing my exam the first time and passing with a score far beyond what I needed. Balancing school, lacrosse, and studying was defiantly a challenge but the Paterno Fellows Program helped me balance it all and do it with great success.

In my experience at The Esport Company, I have worked alongside Human Resources and Management to expand the company. I have done so by creating engaging and inviting social media posts on different platforms for the teams involved in the league. Not only does this promote the brand, but it invites others to join the company's team, further expanding the company further.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, this experience has shown me which classes to take based on what I am doing now. I am heavily involved with social media and online communication, especially being that my internship is virtual. This has made me look into more online communication classes and helped me understand how communicating online is different than in person.

I served as a brands and properties intern at Wasserman, working with the projects team on various tasks. These tasks have involved pitching brand strategy, doing desk research on clients, and much more. I have primarily worked on their NHL and NBA clients.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I have learned a ton from this internship regarding my intended career field, but it has resulted in some struggles with my schoolwork in terms of having time to prioritize all of my assignments. I have still kept up decently well in my classes, but I have had to sacrifice some time studying or small assignments. Overall, this experience has taught me how to properly manage my time and prioritize.

Interning at Homeland Security Investigations has been a great experience. They have given me the opportunity to work along side everyone in the office to achieve their mission. I have been able to go on warrants, listen to court hearings, and sit in on interviews and briefings. I have also had the opportunity to help with their investigations.

How did this experience impact you academically?

The experience I am getting at Homeland Security Investigations is allowing me to use what I am learning in the classroom and apply it to the real world of federal law enforcement. I am also learning many new things that can only be learned in office and field setting.

I would not have know about this internship without the help of the College of Liberal Arts. They sent out the job post to my email which then prompted me to apply. I have also been lucky enough to be granted enrichment funds from the Career Enrichment Network. These funds are allowing me to not worry as much about expenses while doing this un-paid internship.

I would research and interview global Penn State alumni to rebuild their connection and guide future graduating students with advice provided by alumni. Also, as a student intern, I would coordinate Global Alumni Spotlight posts on the Penn State Global SAGA blog and social media (including Facebook and Linkedin). I would also prepare for bi-weekly meetings with the program members to effectively connect with global alumni and introduce each country's culture.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, it did not impact much, but it did help me clarify my career interests.

I applied for this internship position to clarify my interest in my future career. As a senior, I fell into a dilemma where I couldn't decide which path to go between international relations or museum studies. I would say I am still in the process of narrowing it down. Still, I became certain that I would like to continue my career work related to global culture and in an environment where I could meet people from different cultural backgrounds.

I have constantly met with my Liberal Arts advisors to discuss my future career plans. One of the advisors recommended I meet with another student who had the same interests as me. I met with her and discussed what kinds of career paths are related to my interests. The student suggested a "cultural consultant" job and recommended companies related to that job. I gained so much information from her as I did not know being a cultural consultant could be a potential job. Now, I am trying to focus and find a career path to become a cultural consultant.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

At my internship site, Hot Styles Dance company, I was able to experience what running a studio is like. I saw the ins and outs of operating a dance studio, from facilitating company practices, planning team bonding events, registering for competitions, cleaning, interviewing potential staff, teaching lessons and choreographing, and more. I communicated with families and students to determine what is effective and what they look for, such as what dance styles they would like to see more of, what qualities in instructors they enjoy, and more. I used systems such as Jackrabbit to see the internal functions of the business, such as payroll, attendance, emails to the entire studio, etc.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, this internship site allowed me to see what types of curriculums I would like to see in my own dance studio, such as programs for people with disabilities, mental health-focused classes such as therapy through dance, and others that the community lacks. It allowed me to work in a field that I would like to work in full time post-graduation. I learned about customer service, overcoming conflict, communication with competition programs and local events. I was able to see what I still need to work on as an instructor and where I am successful. Overall, this internship site allowed me to work hands-on in a variety of ways I need to be knowledgeable in to be successful in owning my own business. I am so thankful that this internship allowed me to develop as a professional and apply my knowledge to my future.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This internship site allowed me to see what it would be like to operate a dance studio with all of the benefits and negatives that's come with it. As a young adult, I learned more about de-escalating conflict when it arises and communicating effectively with co-workers. When operating my future dance studio, I will understand more logistics from creating schedules, hiring staff, marketing, managing students, building the program, and finances. I have a better understanding of what operating a dance studio during a pandemic entails - and how to overcome COVID-related issues. I was able to create a major that catered to my educational goals: Letters, Arts, and Sciences. I selected all of my classes that would best benefit my future and prepare me with the knowledge I need for my future business. I am also thankful to have been rewarded a scholarship in Liberal Arts for my academics and will use the money to help fund the beginning of my business. I worked as a Research and Development Co-Op within Johnson and Johnson Consumer over the spring and summer 2022 semesters. My work focused on product innovation and addressing key gaps in Johnson and Johnson's skincare product portfolio.

Working at Johnson and Johnson has put me at the intersection of my two majors, sociology and biochemistry and molecular biology. I was able to simultaneously work in a scientific role while following also consumer trends and behaviors.

At Centre Safe, I am tasked daily with duties such as drafting court documents, participating in and completing client intakes, keeping up to date with grant information as we are a non-profit, and other similar tasks. Outside of my physical duties, I also observe the attorneys throughout their preparation sessions with Penn State Law externs as well as sitting in on court hearings when we have them!

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, this experience has taught me a multitude of skills that have proven to be helpful while performing in school. Among this is teamwork. Much of my life, I struggled with being able to perform well while working with others. Although while I am at work, there are not very many tasks that do not go through just about every employee before being considered done. Thus, I have had to increase my ability to perform different tasks that are prevalent in my academic life as well as my work life.

At a point where I was lost on what to do next, my advisor was aware of a non-profit legal service that was currently looking for assistance from Penn State Law professors. Knowing it was a long shot, she advised that I email the director and see if there was anything an undergraduate student would be able to do. Without that push, I would have never received such an amazing opportunity to further my career goals.

This spring 2022, I intern for the company Terez as their marketing and social media intern. I had such a wonderful experience utilizing my skills to work on marketing projects, social media platforms, and being a part of such an amazing team. I was able to learn more about marketing through a hands-on in-person experience, I was also able to learn more through my employees with the guidance of their help on each individual project I worked on. I got to experience a real business day at the office, which will be beneficial for me in the near future.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship impacted me academically because I want to physically learn what a work day consisted of and the projects I would be assisting on in an office. I wanted to utilize my academic skills in an internship where I can show my passion for my major through a business perspective. This internship is bridging the gap between learning and finding a career, and it will speed up the process of moving me toward my career goals. This internship allowed me to try out a career in a low-stakes situation, helping me to make more informed decisions on what I want to do with my life.

This semester, I took CRIM 425, an embedded course with a study abroad experience to Curacao over spring break. This spring break trip allowed me to study abroad for a shorter time period, helping me to determine if a longer study abroad experience might be right for me in the future. I was able to experience multiple different cultures and environments within a criminology context while on the island. The difference in lifestyle was really eye-opening for me and contributed to my perspective and thoughts about crime.

This semester, I took SC 475N/IT 175, which is an embedded course that includes a study abroad experience to Italy over spring break. We did a ton of things in a short amount of time! We met medical students from the University of Bologna and discussed the differences in their university training in Italy versus the US. We toured anatomical wax museums that had large collections of obstetrics figures and saw priceless works of art like Michelangelo's "The David." We had had a cooking class that taught us how to make three types of pasta in Bologna. In Siena, we were shown how traditional Sienese painters of the Middle Ages used gold leaf in their art.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I am committed to learning how to speak and read Italian! Learning Italian wasn't something I considered before my acceptance into this embedded program, but I have found the language easy to pick up and enjoy learning new words every day.

While completing my congressional internship, I was concurrently enrolled in a course on Congress and the Presidency. I was able to use the valuable, real-world experience from my internship in order to inform and enhance the quality of my academic coursework and assignments.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

For four months, I studied and lived in Milan, Italy. I arrived in January, and as I write this, I have just completed midterms - meaning that I have completed the first half of this experience. I have adapted to the Milanese way of life and embraced the culture entirely. I have entirely fallen in love with Milan, grown significantly more comfortable in my Italian language skills, and met so many wonderful people. Most weeks, I travel on the weekends to other European nations; during the week, I make sure to visit a new museum or place of cultural significance. I am constantly learning and am in awe of something new each day.

How did this experience impact you academically?

As an Italian major, this experience has allowed me to finally be immersed in the subject that I have been studying for years. Although I have been fortunate to study Italian prior to my time as a student at Penn State University, I believe that being put in real-life situations has challenged me to develop my Italian skills significantly. At the doctor's office or the hair salon, I have surprised myself finding the correct Italian words, when under pressure to describe an ailment or hair color shade. Being in an Italian-speaking environment has allowed me to utilize my textbook education towards real-world application.

Since arriving in Milan, I have thought heavily about changing my post-graduation plans. Initially, I intended to work in the United States before attending law school. For the embedded course, we traveled to Berne and Geneva, where we explored the production and exportation of various Swiss products. We met with international organization leaders and learned about the challenges facing international groups (banks, consulting firms, labor organizations) today.

I learned about what it means to be part of the world economy and the impacts a small (or large) event has on various sectors. My trip abroad has redefined my interest in international economics and affairs.

UNITE 2030 is a global community of young leaders who are taking action to tackle poverty, inequality, injustice, and climate change by the year 2030. As part of the program, I am able to collaborate with 136 delegates from 61 countries aiming to positively impact 100K people internationally.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This semester as part of the program, I have been participating in seminars and debates with industry professionals to study policymaking through real-world cases. With my group, we're learning about leadership and policymaking, while working on a policy directed to solve inequality in health care at the United Nations level. I am also preparing to present and engage with 100+ strategic partners in the Youth SDG summit that happens alongside the United Nations General Assembly in September.

I traveled to Curacao with my CRIM 425 class over spring break to study organized crime. We were able to talk to many professionals, including a DEA agent, the Dutch Military Police, the Curacao Coast Guard, and more. A Curacao police officer even gave us a tour of the island and talked about his cases. Apart from class related material, we were able to immerse ourselves in the culture and learn about Curacao history.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I learned a lot about how different law enforcement work together, even internationally, to have a coordinated response to organized crime. While a lot of the information was similar to what we had already learned in class, being there and hearing from the people directly involved helped me understand the true impact and the challenges that these people face.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Our program was designed to give us a detailed understanding of the ancient wonders of the World. Since all of these wonders existed at a point during the Hellenistic Period of Greece, part of this course included an embedded study abroad experience in Greece. It was there that we were able to tour the sites of ancient ruins like the Acropolis in Athens, the Olympic Stadium in Olympia, and other sites in Argos, Corinth, and Nafplion to name a few.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Fortunately, this course was an honors level course as well as a humanity course. It simultaneously allowed me to complete another General Humanity credit towards my graduation from the College of the Liberal Arts as well as meet the required number of honors credits for the Schreyer Honors College.

The College of the Liberal Arts has been a tremendous help in making this experience possible. I never would have been informed about this opportunity were it not for an email from their newsletter. They spared to effort in informing us about every detail necessary to prepare us for the trip prior to departure, promoted enrichment funding for use while abroad, and were proactive in ensuring our safe return. In fact, two especially important people were Anne Killebrew and Jane Skinner who facilitated the program and experience to the utmost degree.

I have been taking classes in Athens about the ancient world. Some of these classes have taken place in a classroom, while others take place on site around the city of Athens. On the weekends we visit various ancient sites throughout Greece, such as Olympia, Crete, and Delphi.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Being able to witness the objects of my studies in person has truly given me a deeper understanding and respect of the ancient world. Additionally, I have been engaging in a deeper level of education about the interactions between Greek and Roman culture, which is extremely relevant to my intended field of study.

By pursuing a career in the classics, I will doubtless need to work in and around Greece in my future. My familiarity with modern Greek culture and language will be extremely helpful for this. Anatomy in Italy brings together language, culture, history, and science in a unique way that allows students to explore not only another country but themselves as they learn about typical subjects from an interdisciplinary, non-typical approach.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Through this experience, I was able to experience a new approach to basic subjects covered within the college setting. Not only did the travel abroad experience allow for a whole new type of learning experience, but the mixing of different subjects within the course itself provided students with an opportunity to learn new concepts with a type of depth, breadth, and context that other classes do not provide.

Anatomy in Italy allowed for students to understand health care systems in other countries through opportunities to connect with Italian medical students while in Italy, tours of state-of-the-art Italian hospitals, and classroom experiences here in State College. This will be extremely helpful as I am looking to pursue a career in the medical field after graduating from Penn State. Also, the exposure to new cultures and lifestyles is a component of the class that will be beneficial for any career or experience that life provides.

With the help of the College of Liberal Arts, I was able to maximize my experience in Italy through the financial support that the Career Enrichment Network helped provide. Additionally, the instructors that helped prepare us for our experience in Italy in addition to the instruction and guidance provided while in Italy, truly made this trip a once in a life time opportunity.

Through this embedded course, I had the opportunity to visit another country for the first time. We met with a DEA agent and toured the US military base in Curacao. We also got a tour of customs, got to see how people try to smuggle drugs into other countries, and watched a police dog at work. We also went on a tour of the city with a police officer who taught us about the local gangs and an assassination of a political figure there. We also got the opportunity to participate in a salsa dancing class.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I have never travelled out of the country before, so traveling with Penn State through an embedded course seemed like a perfect opportunity. It was nice to have people there that our professor, Howard Smith, knew. Having people who know the island and it's inner workings was a nice touch to the trip that made the cultural experiences more impactful. It was also intriguing to see the way in which foreign governments differ from our own, as well as how the criminal justice system works in another place.

I think it was interesting to see how much the United States is involved with other countries. Since I am a Spanish minor, it would be beneficial for me to work in other countries where they speak Spanish so I can improve and hold onto the language.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

Brandon McCartney and Howard Smith were excellent staff to have on the trip. They both provided a fun, but also meaningful embedded experience. Howard's dedication to studying abroad and his wide range of knowledge made me feel excited to learn on the trip. I really liked that he has such close contact with those in Curacao, as well as in the Netherlands, to give students the full immersive experience, even though it was just for a week. I also greatly appreciated the Career Enrichment Network, as the funds they provided relieved a lot of financial stress for my family.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I am currently studying abroad in Amman, Jordan with CIEE’s Middle East Studies program for the spring semester. My coursework includes Modern Standard Arabic, Ammiya (Jordanian Arabic), Conflict and Diplomacy in the Middle East, and an internship for credit. I am interning with the Middle East Regional Office of American Friends Service Committee. Through excursions with the program, I have had the opportunity to explore and engage with the local culture in Amman as well as other beautiful and historic sites throughout Jordan.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Living and studying in Amman has given me the opportunity to improve my Arabic significantly. Much of my coursework is focused on learning Arabic and while here I have been able to continue my study of Modern Standard Arabic and have learned the Jordanian dialect, which has enabled me to be able to communicate more effectively in Arabic. Moreover, I have learned many new perspectives on Middle Eastern politics from both my coursework, which includes a class taught by a Jordanian senator, and locals.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

While here, I have had the opportunity to intern with American Friends Service Committee. The opportunity has given me invaluable insights into working in the non-profit sector and expanded my knowledge of the MENA region, a regional area I wish to work in in the future. Part of my work is organizing conferences throughout the MENA region where experts and activists from around MENA are brought together to discuss different issues facing the region. The work has introduced me to different issues facing the region outside of what is discussed in Western media, like the impacts of climate change, issues surrounding unemployment, the impact of refugees and international aid on host countries and more.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

The College of the Liberal Arts has been an instrumental resource in assisting me with this experience. The College has provided me with enrichment funding that has made this experience possible for me. Additionally, my Arabic professor encouraged me to apply to the program and was very supportive of my preparations for the program.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program strongly encourages students to participate in study abroad experiences and offers a lot of support for students who do.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This semester I continued my work with Dr. Frank Hillary's Neuropsychology Laboratory. I am currently training to be a part of a multi-site Interpersonal Violence and Traumatic Brain Injury study that both of my laboratories will be a part of. I am working on both the research and clinical side of this project, which are important skills to have for graduate school. On the research side, I am learning the imaging protocol, where data will be stored, how a study is actually run, and how the IRB plays into this. On the clinical side of this project, I am learning how to administer neuropsychological tests.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My experience in Dr. Hillary's lab has influenced my academics in a myriad of ways. By being in his lab, I was offered to join one of his graduate seminars. Being in his graduate-level class has allowed me to immerse myself into what it would be like to be a graduate student. It also has taught me what it take to manage a schedule with a graduate level course in it. Now that I have taken a graduate course, I plan to take more in the upcoming semesters.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

My time in Dr. Hillary's lab has changed my life completely. Being an independent student has made my undergraduate experience tumultuous at times, but Dr. Hillary has mentored me through that quite a bit. I now know the steps I need to take to start graduate school for clinical neuropsychology, what paths I can take in graduate school, what internship looks like, what a postdoctoral fellowship looks like, and what it is like to finally be a practicing clinical neuropsychologist.

The College of the Liberal Arts has helped me immensely with my research and my overall success as a student. The faculty, the advisors, and the funding have truly been a blessing while being at Penn State. They have helped me navigate just about anything you can think of regarding academics, career, funding, etc.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I studied in the heart of London from January to May of 2022. During the week, I went to class and studied Criminology. On the weekends, I traveled around Europe and learned about so many different cultures. It was incredible to be able to experience all of these things in such a short period of time. Europe has such a rich history, and it was amazing to see it all through the art and architecture of its cities. I learned so much more than I could have ever imagined.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Courses were structured much differently in London than they are at Penn State, and while it was an adjustment, it was a welcomed change. I hope to apply the skills I used in this new classroom setting to my learning at Penn State. This experience has made me a better, more well-rounded student.

I moved thousands of miles away from home, and I was able to navigate a foreign city on my own. I'm proud of what I've done here, and I can incorporate this confidence into my future work.

I'm very grateful to the College of Liberal Arts for what they've done for me. I felt supported every step of my journey. I received enrichment funding, which helped me get here, and meetings with my advisor along with education abroad advisors assured me I could find a program that fits for me and my plan to graduate in May 2023.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I am currently working as an intern under Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s special initiatives team led by Executive Deputy Attorney General Rob Reed. This team focuses on criminal justice reform through trauma-informed practices. I am working for the only attorney general-sponsored reentry council in the United States This work is derived from Governor Wolf’s trauma-informed plan (HEAL PA).

How did this experience impact you academically?

The skills I've obtained in class have helped immensely when creating recommendations for policy based on discussion and research with the Criminal Justice Actions Teams. Not only this, but I have learned real world application of law, research, and policy.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

My career goals are to enact reform through policy. Through this internship, I have been in discussions with judges, attorneys, heads of Pennsylvania prisons, researchers, and individuals with firsthand experience in the criminal justice system to work toward a state that values trauma-informed practices over retributive practices. This work generates recommendations into policy that benefit both those involved in the criminal justice system and society as well. Topics of reform include prevention, extremism, corrections, probation and parole, reentry, policing, and sentencing.

I am studying abroad for the spring 2022 semester in Valencia, Spain. My coursework includes Spanish History, Latin American Civilization, Translation, and International Business. I live with a host family with whom I share meals and take part in local traditions. I have had the opportunity to engage with community-based organizations that promote global citizenship and cross-cultural connections.

How did this experience impact you academically?

The classes I take here are entirely in Spanish, which has allowed me to expand my vocabulary in an academic setting. As a Global & International Studies major, my coursework has helped me to develop a deeper understanding of how culture and identity influence various aspects of society. Additionally, my interests in human resources and employment relations have grown from exposure to new work expectations and legal systems here in Valencia.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I traveled to Rome, Italy to study in the IES program for the Spring semester of 2022. I arrived at the end of January and I am currently a little over halfway through my program! I have been able to take interesting courses, including an intro to the Italian language course which has allowed me to learn the language and adjust to life here in Rome. I have visited numerous culturally significant sites such as museums and historical ruins, both individually and with my classes. I have also been lucky enough to travel to other European countries, such as France, Spain, and Portugal!

How did this experience impact you academically?

I have taken several interesting courses this semester. One of these is my cross-cultural psychology class. This has allowed me to learn about subjects within my major in an entirely new perspective. I have developed my global awareness, both in the field of psychology and in my daily life! I have also been able to pursue my personal interests. For example, I am taking a class on the city of Pompeii and will visit the area at the end of the program! I have grown in my appreciation for art and history while also learning more about my major.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience will impact my career goals, as I have developed tremendously as an individual. I have become much more independent as well as more culturally aware. I will be able to apply this independence and ability to adapt to new situations in my future career. I will be more empowered to step out of my comfort zone as well. Also, having a strong global awareness and cultural sensitivity is very important in my field of business psychology. I have also become much more interested in global and cultural issues, so I hope to integrate this in my future career.

I have been able to make the most out of this experience with this financial support by putting the funds towards cultural experiences such as tickets to museums, sites, and other experiences. I have also been able to use these funds to gain a deeper understanding of my experiences, through the purchase of textbooks and other educational materials.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This semester, I served as the Historical Preservation Intern for the Centre County Planning and Community Development Office (CCPCDO). During the internship, I researched the Rodef Shalom Jewish Cemetery in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, which is located about fifteen minutes north of State College. I also wrote and researched bibliographies for a dozen individuals buried in Rodef Shalom. Each bibliography included information I found through physical archival research at the PA Room in Bellefonte and online research through the databases on the Pennsylvania Newspaper Archive, Ancestry, and Family Search.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My internship with the CCPCDO overlaps with my thesis topic, which is an ethnographic and historical study of the Jewish communities of Central Pennsylvania. The research I conducted for the internship helped me gain a deeper understanding of the Jewish community of Bellefonte in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It also allowed me to learn more about the history of the Jewish institutions in Bellefonte, which will aid me in my thesis research.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience made me realize I can work within the government and still pursue my passion for the preservation of Jewish history. While I intend to work for a Jewish history or Holocaust museum after I graduate, the CCPCDO internship allowed me to experience a professional environment outside of a museum. Through the experience, I also enhanced my research skills both in physical archives and online, which will make me more marketable in the future.

I learned about this internship through an email from the Department of History with different internship opportunities. Dr. Milligan, the Internship Coordinator for the Department of History, was extremely helpful during the CCPCDO application process and helped me through the process of taking this internship for academic credit. I am also grateful for the internship stipend provided through the Department of History.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program has encouraged me to take advantage of countless opportunities while at Penn State. I always feel supported by the program in my endeavors, whether it be an internship, research, or study abroad experience.

I spent three months in Athens, Greece during the spring semester taking classes about the art, archaeology, and rhetoric of Ancient Greece. We visited many historical sites, such as Delphi, Olympia, Knossos, and Mycenae

Since the classes were discussion-based, I feel I was able to hone my discussion skills and become more adept at articulating my thoughts.

I spent the semester as an intern for the Penn State Wrestling Director of Operations. I had the opportunity to observe the in's and out's of how to run a highly functional and efficient NCAA athletic program.

This internship experience helped me see the behind the scenes of how leadership is demonstrated through efficiency and organization, and how these skills translate to the performance of athletes on competition day.

This experience was fantastic. I interned five days a week, splitting my time between Mandalay Pictures and The Lede Company. In addition to my internships, I took 12 credits of Penn State classes in Los Angeles, all of which were geared toward the entertainment industry. The classes were General Media/Entertainment Industry, Entertainment Law, and The Art of Comedy.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience pushed me academically because I had to balance my academics with working full-time (between the two internships). I have learned so much about the entertainment industry, which I hope to work in after undergrad. The work I have done through my internships also supplements my academic track quite nicely; I gained real-world public relations/publicity experience through my daily tasks at LEDE. At Mandalay, I learned about budgeting films and reading scripts that exposed me to many different forms of storytelling. I also utilized my French degree by considering different markets and how the entertainment industry has cross-cultural implications. Finally, the classes have pushed me academically and given me ideas for my undergraduate honors thesis.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience will greatly impact my career goals. This program has shown me the professional paths that really appeal to me: publicity, management, and creative (writing, directing, show running). This experience has exposed me to the endless opportunities within this industry, as well as the ability to pivot between them. I have a much better vision and scope of the industry because of this program.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

In May 2022 I studied abroad in Florence, Italy at the International Studies Institute as part of the Maymester program. For 3 weeks I took IB 399: Doing Business in Italy and the Mediterranean where I learned various things about the business environment of Italy and foreign exchange rates while having the opportunity to visit many local businesses and companies, such as a winery. In addition, I resided in an apartment in the heart of Florence where I experienced the local culture by eating at amazing restaurants, sightseeing, and enjoying the nightlife. Overall, I had an awesome time and would highly recommend Florence to everyone interested in going!

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I interned with the U.S. State Department's Office of Management Strategy Solutions and Center for Analytics. The office is currently the hub of data analytics for the State Department as a whole. I got to work on several meaningful projects that directly affected foreign policy.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I was able to get credit for the internship by enrolling in a class meant to enrich my experiences. I wrote about my experiences and discussed various assigned topics with classmates. As for the future of my academic career, it gave me a feeling of empowerment. It was also an inspiration to work even harder in classes next semester so that my transcript might be impressive to anyone reviewing it in the process of applying for jobs after graduation.

This experience was my foot in the door to the vast bureaucracy that is the US federal government. I have a goal of working in government someday, either the State Department or the intelligence community. The one thing that helped me the most was the enrichment funds. Aside from attending classes full-time and having this internship, I also have a full time job. Luckily, I have an incredible boss who has encouraged me every step of the way to follow my dreams. She allowed me to take any time off that I needed to complete this internship! I have been paid part of my salary while at home but not the whole amount, so having the enrichment funds has helped tremendously. Without it and without my paycheck coming in, I would not have had any financial means during the time of the unpaid internship. I am extremely grateful for the enrichment funds.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

As an intern at the Dauphin County Coroner and Forensic Center, my main function is to assist the Deputy Coroners in scene investigations to determine cause and manner of death. To accomplish this goal, we coordinate with law enforcement, take forensic photographs of the scene and decedent, locate next-of-kin, interview family members, examine for physical indicators of trauma and post-mortem interval (like rigor mortis), and investigate past medical history. I also perform support roles in autopsies by making the Y-incision on the decedent, weighing organs, extracting urine samples, and closing the incision at the conclusion of the procedure. The most exciting aspect of the internship is the dynamic, ever-changing nature of medicolegal investigations. No day is the same, and it provides for the constant stimulation of the mind.

How did this experience impact you academically?

While I have gained valuable experience in the medicolegal field, my internship also functions as an academic environment for learning and inquiry. I am required to read a Forensic Pathology textbook, with midterm and final examinations. Scene investigations and autopsies serve as practicals for my reading, forums where I may apply my knowledge to real-world situations. This intersection of learning and application has allowed me more insight into myself as a student and will prepare me for upper-level Anthropological Science courses with similar configurations.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

My ultimate career goal is to work for federal or international law enforcement organizations like the FBI or INTERPOL as a criminal investigator. Interning with the coroner's office has given me insight into how to conduct a proper investigation, interact with different and pertinent agencies, and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) outlined by my own agency. Medicolegal investigation, thus, will guide my future career in intelligence through a well-rounded education of both the decedents' ailments and the perpetrators' motives, while a normal trajectory through criminal justice or forensics may limit me to one or the other, respectively.

As a student transitioning from a branch campus to University Park, Anthropology and Liberal Arts advisors have been essential to guiding me through the internship process. DeAnn Martz, although not my advisor, has been diligent in answering my every inquiry and directing me to LA 495, Summer Internship Experience. Stacey Hoffman has helped me immensely with registering for LA 495 and leading me through the enrichment fund application. I am so grateful for their help!

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer I was given the opportunity to do an internship at the New Jersey Public Defender's Office. I worked alongside attorneys and got to experience what they do on a daily basis. I am currently working on a couple of projects, one of which includes research on the psychological aspect of law. In addition to this research, I have been able to attend court and listen into hearings both in person and on zoom.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship has helped me experience what the psychological and neurological aspects of law include. One of the projects that I had to do for the internship was cold-calling clients to remind them of their court dates and relaying questions to their attorneys. This gave me more and better communication skills as I have never had to cold-call people before. Along with this, I have gotten much better at organization and attention to detail. These two traits are extremely important when dealing with people's lives and court cases.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience has given me insight into what I would like to do with my future. Up until this year, my focus was pre-med and biology. I switched into the Psychology major with a focus in neuroscience but did not know exactly what I wanted to do. I realized after some time that I wanted to do research on criminal behavior. This internship has given me so many connections to attorneys and other people in the legal field. These connections will help continue my hopes for a career in this world.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer I worked as a remote medical scribe for the cardiology department. As a scribe, I was responsible for taking notes during a patient interview, writing up the encounter on a medical chart, and assisting with the flow of patients through the emergency department. I learned so much about what it is like to work in a medical setting and how challenging yet rewarding it can be at times.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I have learned the crucial skill of time management. As a medical scribe, it is important that all documentation be completed in a timely manner in order to improve patient flow and overall outcomes. Additionally, my physician mentor has given me advice that will help me in graduate school.

At the Baltimore County Police internship I worked with CIDs (investigators) as well as completed ride alongs with different officers from the stationed Precinct that helped me gain experience in one aspect of the field in which I am interested in pursuing as my future career. This also gave me the chance to speak with individuals already in the field which gave me knowledge through advice, make connections with others, and experience aspects of the job first-hand. On the weekends, I found myself flying all across the country exploring different Southwest destinations including Seattle, New York City, and Puerto Rico.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience allowed me to apply my academic experience within a Fortune 500 company and required translating management and organizational leadership studies into concrete action plans implemented by the company. Utilizing all of the fabulous resources provided by professors, I was able to make a tangible impact on Southwest as we seek to lead the airline industry in sustainable leadership development.

Moving across the country to Dallas was a daunting challenge but my liberal arts education and the resources provided by the College assisted me in every step of the way.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I spent 5 weeks in Oaxaca, Mexico for my global health minor fieldwork. During my time in Oaxaca, I rotated at the public hospital, an NGO, and several government sponsored community health clinics. In addition, I lived in a homestay and participated in a Spanish language intensive. When I was not shadowing healthcare and public health professionals, I was attending lectures from local community members, visiting cultural sites, and traveling to nearby artisanal villages.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience was a capstone for my global health minor and provided real world experience that I connected to my past coursework on public health, epidemiology, communicable diseases, biology, bioethics, and health psychology. In addition, I was able to learn more about Latin American culture and the Mexican health system.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

My time in Oaxaca solidified my interest to work in health policy to address health disparities and inequity. I will likely be working with the growing Mexican immigrant population in the US in my future career. Having an understanding of Mexican culture and basic Spanish language proficiency will increase my ability to connect and serve this population. In addition, this experience made me feel more prepared for my MSc in Public Health program, which begins this September.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I have been given the opportunity to intern at S&P Global in New York where I will be spending most of my time with the sales team for PVR (pricing, valuation, and reference data) products. I have already been involved with client outreach, product training, cold calling, and many conversations with people who have been in the business for many years. Next week I have a call with someone who runs the commodities at sea campaign which is a product that leverages satellites to track ship movements in real-time to study commodity flows and supply chains.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship brought into motion many of the themes and lessons from my classes in the College of the Liberal Arts and has given me an additional drive to take all that I can from classes. I was fortunate to be positioned in S&P, a massive global enterprise with hands in many parts of the world. One day I would find myself talking with the head of sustainable finance, and the next I would be talking with the head of economic and country risk data. Being able to see how the knowledge from my classes eventually trickles down into business reaffirms the value of my liberal arts degree and makes me excited for my next year of classes.

I cannot express enough gratitude for the opportunity to intern at S&P Global as it has exposed me to careers and fields that I did not know previously existed. Far and away the best experience of my internship was the ability to meet interesting and driven people who have lived storied lives. Now I have connections that I foresee withstanding the test of time. My advice to anyone in an internship is to meet as many people as possible. This practice has an extraordinary return on time with rewards in the form of career foresight, gaining allies, and simply having conversations with fascinating people.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

For nearly three weeks, I traveled throughout Rome and Southern Italy to learn about the regal, republican, and imperial eras of Ancient Roman history. I spent time in Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Sorrento, Ostia, Paestum, and Florence. The program predominately focused on the social, economic, and political life of Ancient Rome, but our travels allowed us to broaden our knowledge of Ancient Rome to include peoples and communities outside of Rome. The program included lectures as well as guided tours of museums and archaeological sites.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience allowed me to complete my minor in Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAMS). While I now have a minor in CAMS, my prior CAMS coursework has largely focused on the Near East. This program, however, has expanded my knowledge of the ancient world beyond the Near East. Additionally, the ability to learn about Ancient Rome while touring sites directly related to the history, such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, enhanced and deepened my learning experience.

After I graduate, I intend to work in education or public programming at a Jewish history museum. For example, the ability to choose a site for our on-site presentation allowed me to study ancient Jewish history though my research on the Arch of Titus and Rome’s destruction of the Second Temple. During our free time, I was also able to tour the Jewish Museum of Rome and the Great Synagogue of Rome. These tours allowed me to learn about the modern history of Jewish life in Rome.

I am extremely grateful for the financial support I received from the College of the Liberal Arts and the Jewish Studies Department. Without the enrichment funds from the College of the Liberal Arts and the scholarships I received from the Jewish Studies Department, this experience would not have been possible. Both sources of funding helped me participate in this program, which enhanced both my professional and academic growth.

Spending the spring semester of my junior year in Sevilla, Spain through CIEE’s program gave me the opportunity to gain a broader knowledge of world cultures and experience a totally new way of life. In addition to taking classes at CIEE’s building, I took classes at the University of Sevilla. I had the wonderful opportunity of living in a homestay with a host mom, experiencing traditional Spanish cuisine, and engaging in conversation daily. Having the opportunity to speak Spanish with my host mom, professors, and locals has greatly improved my speaking skills.

How did this experience impact you academically?

As a psychology major with a Spanish minor, this semester has helped me tremendously academically. Not only did the courses I took abroad fulfill the remaining requirements for my Spanish minor, but they also grew my understanding of the Spanish language. I am more confident in my listening and speaking skills as a result of my semester studying in Spain and am confident that they will continue to improve.

Having the goal of becoming a mental health counselor, being able to speak Spanish will certainly aid in my career. I am passionate about helping others and I feel that minoring in Spanish and having improved my fluency in Spain will expand the audience I can reach as a mental health counselor. Since Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world, I also feel that employers consider being multilingual a valuable skill.

The enrichment funds were incredibly helpful to this experience since learning a language is best when fully immersed and surrounded by native speakers. My psychology advisor helped me prepare by discussing how a semester abroad would affect my degree plan. Additionally, speaking with my Spanish minor advisor throughout the application and course selection process was crucial in guaranteeing that I was going to get the most from this experience. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

PNC Bank's Asset Management Group consists of two arms: the private bank and institutional management. For the summer of 2022, I was an intern on the institutional side. Throughout the course of the six weeks, I developed a comprehensive understanding of how the group conducts business. I was given the opportunity to shadow employees and attend client meetings. Additionally, I prepared weekly market updates and distributed them to the entire team of 17. Towards the end of the internship, we presented a final capstone presentation where we had to pitch PNC's investment strategy to a board of directors. The experience was truly unique and taught me how business is conducted in real life.

How did this experience impact you academically?

The summer internship experience enhanced my understanding of the business of Asset Management. The real life exposure has taught me key elements of the industry which I would not have picked up through academic courses in college. I learned presentation skills, how to make reports, enhanced my attention to detail, and more importantly I learned how to leave a positive impression by the conversations I had in passing with my colleagues. I developed a routine that taught me how to maintain a work-life balance. Carrying the knowledge I have gathered from my internship into my senior year of college will allow me to put my best foot forward in everything I do. Completing tasks with a sense of purpose and perspective, is a skill I did not possess in my first few years of college. Moving ahead, I know that the courses I am taking will directly be applicable to the work I will be doing in the industry. This fact will motivate me and complement my actions.

I think the biggest impact this internship will have is on my career. Being an international student, the job market is exponentially harder to break into. Having an internship will show recruiters that I am determined to make the most of my time, utilize it in the best way possible, and to a certain extent prove to be an adage to the value I may hold as a worker with a certain level of experience. Moreover, it gives me perspective. It gives me time to question whether I truly like the things I think I like.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Over the course of 18 days, we studied Rome's history as we visited ancient ruins throughout the city of Rome and even Pompeii. Our class was able to visit wonders such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Pompeii, the Mausoleum of Augustus and so much more. It was a truly enriching and remarkable experience to learn about these ruins and their rich history firsthand rather than from the pages of a textbook.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This study abroad experience significantly enhanced my academic experience at Penn State. Being able to study history on-site allows for a much more thorough academic experience than a standard classroom can provide. This experience allowed me to walk the same stone streets as the Romans did 2,000 years ago and it allowed me to examine the magnificence of these ancient ruins with my own eyes. Being able to see (and sometimes touch) such historically significant ruins in one of the most prosperous cities in all of history was highly impactful.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience introduced me to some of the most amazing, knowledgeable professors in the field which inspire me to continue my education beyond a degree in Classics. On an optional trip to Florence, Prof. Hanses introduced the group to one of his colleagues who is pursuing their Ph.D. in Classics in both Florence and Heidelberg, Germany. She provided me with helpful advice about Ph.D. programs outside of the United States that could greatly impact by career goal of being a researcher and professor in Ancient Near Eastern Studies.

The College of the Liberal Arts helped me succeed in this experience by providing me with funds to participate in this study abroad program in Rome. Without the financial aid provided by the College of the Liberal Arts Enrichment Funding Program, I would not have been able to attend this remarkable program. Furthermore, the professors on this trip provided us all with a great learning experience despite the challenges that came with international travel in a post-2020 world. With the help of Professors Hanses, Nabel and Wheeler, I was able to academically succeed in this experience and gain a better knowledge of Roman history.

Being a Paterno Fellow within the College of the Liberal Arts helps me strive to get the most out of my experience at Penn State. The PFP pushed me to participate in this study abroad experience through the CAMS department, and it helped fund the experience as well. I conducted sociolinguistic research on Spanish-English bilinguals to understand how to use code-switching (alternating between both languages in a single sentence) to better understand the grammatical implications of nonbinary pronouns (i.e they/them) in singular referential contexts. With this research, I am hopeful to help bridge the gap between both languages as they explore language outside of the gender binary, which will lead to a more understanding and inclusive environment for all.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience provided me with technical research skills like interpersonal communication, coding/data analysis, problem solving, etc. that I plan to bring with me to the classroom and to my future career. I feel much more well-rounded in my pursuit of personal and educational experiences as I try to make the most of my time at Penn State. While the majority of my time is spent in the engineering field, having the opportunity to direct time and energy towards language and linguistic studies as they relate to social justice was refreshing and exciting!

I had the opportunity to study the psychology of religion and cultural psychology in Athens, Greece. Greece is a country that is rich in history, so I was able to apply all the information I have been learning in class to the historical sites I toured. I learned so much about ancient and contemporary Greek culture. Additionally, I learned a lot about myself. I am so thankful for this experience and I will cherish it forever.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This trip focused on how natural disasters affect a developing country like Thailand and we spent 20 days in-country experiential learning. Two weeks were spent in and around Bangkok learning about the effects of coastal/urban flooding and sea-level rise while the other week was spent in Chiang Rai learning about rural flooding and earthquakes. We ate traditional Thai cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and had Thai students from Kasetsart University accompany us on our travels. We spent time cultivating discussion around specific topics and used our experiences to draw conclusions and ask questions about the phenomena we observed.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I loved this experience because I was able to combine the intersection of human and physical geography (natural disaster effects) with global studies. Learning in a completely new country is an unrivaled experience and it reassured my interest in how problems affect each nation differently. I was able to focus on truly absorbing the information and applying what I learned to real-world issues rather than just focusing on doing well on a test. I would love to learn more about Southeast Asia in my GLIS classes.

I hope to use my skills and experiences gained in college to pursue a career in the federal government. My sights are set specifically on the Department of State in the consular/diplomacy/international affairs realm. Having travel/study abroad experience in a non-Western country will give me a leg up on other candidates for those positions.

I received Liberal Arts Enrichment Funds which helped to cover some costs of my trip. This ensured that I was able to fully immerse myself without having to worry about the finances. I'm grateful to be a GLIS major where a limited amount of funds were guaranteed for my first international experience. I felt supported my entire time abroad and I am so thankful to have received funding.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program emphasizes the importance of gaining experience abroad, and while I was already planning to do some sort of study abroad while in college, that extra push from PFP is what I needed to kick it into gear and do it as a sophomore. Gaining this experience early and loving it means that I have more opportunities to do embedded courses in the future and broaden my worldview.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This internship at Arista Counseling and Psychotherapy consisted of training and supervision by a licensed psychologist to work as an intake counselor dealing with a diverse patient population. I gained the experience of working with adults, children, and families with substance abuse issues, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, ADHD, abuse, marriage and family stress and more. I also learned the overall administration for running a private practice. At Arista, I had the valuable opportunity for face to face interaction with patients, all of which are necessary skills to be successful in grad school and in the mental health field.

How did this experience impact you academically?

After graduating in the spring semester of 2023, I hope to obtain a master's degree in counseling to become a licensed professional counselor. At Arista, I had the opportunity to work with patients struggling with issues such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, some of the many topics I have learned about in my psychology courses at Penn State. Throughout my internship, I have furthered my understanding of such disorders and am certain that this growth is beneficial for my future courses at Penn State. I am confident that the skills I gained as a result of this internship have successfully prepared me for graduate school.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience provided me with the valuable skills needed to be a successful mental health counselor. With many programs offering specific paths and coursework for different counseling careers, I gained a better understanding of which programs I would like to apply for. I understand how valuable experiences like this internship are in my application to graduate level counseling programs. I am grateful that I was selected for one of the few spots given to an applicant pool of several hundred undergraduate students.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I had the opportunity to spend 6 weeks living with a host family in Puebla, Mexico. During this time, I was enrolled in 3 classes at the local university (IBERO), Intro to Theatre, Mexican literature, and Mexican history. Our cohort took multiple excursions to prominent Mexican cities, including Oaxaca, Cuetzalan, and D.F., and visited local museums, markets, archaeological sites, restaurants, and much more. This program was immersion-focused, and I loved being able to explore the city, meet new people, and surround myself with Mexican culture.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Not only did this experience allow me to finish my Spanish minor, something I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise, but it gave me the chance to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom to real life. The experience is starkly different between reading Hispanic literature/practicing the language in the classroom and learning that content while actually living in a Spanish-speaking country. The experiences allotted by this program heavily enriched my study of the Spanish language.

After graduation, I will be pursuing a career in Marketing/ Public Relations. As a first-generation Mexican American, it’s always been important to me to work in a diverse community and be able to utilize bilingualism in the workplace. I hope to be able to provide services to a larger breadth of clients and help diverse companies thrive. This experience has greatly helped me not only attain a higher professional proficiency in Spanish, but also to better understand the experience of living in Mexico and all of the cultural nuances, something we can’t fully understand in the U.S.

I always knew I wanted to study abroad and would need to do a Summer program, but wasn’t sure about which program. The education abroad fair was very helpful, to actually talk to and look at all the program offerings at the Liberal Arts table. The Spanish advising faculty also helped me to make sure the credits would fulfill my Spanish minor. In addition, the enrichment funds I received from the College of the Liberal Arts were a huge help in lifting the financial burden of this experience.

During my legislative internship with the United States House of Representatives, I attended congressional briefings, hearings and markups, drafted legislation memos, met with activists and constituents, and tracked votes on the House floor. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I studied in Florence, Italy for six weeks with the International Studies Institute. They had two academic buildings in the city and I had one class in each building. I took two classes total and I learned about the history and culture of Italian food in one course and the concept of sustainability in the fashion industry. Both classes had enriching discussions, experiences, and field trips in which I was able to participate. On the weekends, I had the opportunity to travel with my roommates and friends which all were such memorable trips that I will never forget.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Overall, the entire study abroad experience has been very rewarding personally and academically. Not only was I able to experience and understand myself in a completely new environment, I was also able to learn about Italy's culture, history, ways of life, social habits, food and drinking customs, and much more. The classes I took while abroad were very enlightening and refreshing topics that a student doesn't necessarily get while in the United States. Plus, almost every experience or activity abroad will provide students an opportunity for learning and growth.

For the past few years, I have been struggling to find a specific field that I want to pursue for my career. Yet, this study abroad experience helped me determine that I really enjoy the intricacies and details that are behind the fashion industry, so I would love to pursue that as part of my career. Additionally, I have learned while in Florence that I enjoy living in the chaos of a city, so I will most likely search for a job located in a city after graduation.

While talking to an adviser, she mentioned to me the various scholarships offered by Penn State for study abroad students and sent me a link to a page with a comprehensive list of all scholarships that could be applicable to my study abroad. In this list, I found the College of the Liberal Arts Enrichment Funds Scholarship and decided to apply. Their contribution to my study abroad experience has been very generous and tremendously helpful in limiting the financial stress of the trip.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I was a quantitative analytics intern at PNC. At my internship in the Washington, D.C. area I used programming, statistics, and machine learning to generate solutions for the bank. My team presented a final project incorporating these skills in Pittsburgh to our team of executives and managers.

How did this experience impact you academically?

It was useful academically as I had not had the chance to apply much of what I had learned in college up to this point. Use it or lose it as they say. To be specific, applying programming in the real world and working with large data structures that require financial insight helped ingrain the skills I have developed throughout college.

The Chapel Executive Internship award made the living and food expenses during this internship far more affordable. As a result of this funding I was able to focus on succeeding in this internship and receiving a return offer. This money also enabled me to save some money that I made during this internship which benefits my financial situation next semester.

My experience at Mid Penn Bank helped expand my knowledge of banking an financial services. Additionally, this internship helped me recognize the importance of community service and giving back to local areas. One of my favorite experiences from my internship was getting together with the other Mid Penn Bank interns and trimming trails at the Big Boyd Tree Farm in Harrisburg. I enjoyed getting to know my peers while helping out the local state park. Overall, this internship helped my professional development and enabled me to create important connections with my mentors and peers.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My internship experience at Mid Penn Bank enabled me to expand my knowledge of finances and my knowledge of money and banking. I learned at lot about personal finances, wealth management, and customer service through educational lectures at Mid Penn Bank’s University. Mid Penn Bank created their university to better train their employees and assist them with professional development. The classes at the university enabled me to create connections with the other interns as well as learn from mentors and the executive team. Mid Penn University gave me the opportunity to learn in a classroom environment alongside other interns.

My internship experience impacted my future career goals because it allowed me to explore the money and banking side of economics. I have not had much exposure to the financial side of economics in my coursework because I typically take classes relating to the political side of economics, so this internship allowed me to realize that I am open to careers in finance as well as economics and political science.

I interned as a Global Business Organization Sales Intern under the LinkedIn Sales Solutions team. I was assigned to the major accounts team that was verticalized for financial services. Over the course of 12 weeks, I was tasked with learning the organization and identifying areas of improvement in our executive engagement processes. At the end of my internship, I presented to 6 senior leaders 3 major recommendations to up level executive engagement and brand recognition for LinkedIn's Sales software. 

How did this experience impact you academically?

I had the opportunity to learn about the tech industry and software sales through my team and various members of the organization. I was able to experience virtual and in-person client facing events, as well as witness internal events and processes.

My career trajectory has pivoted towards sales and software. I found my internship very engaging and would like to learn more about sales, software, and the tech industry. The Chapel Executive Internship program made it possible to afford comfortable housing, food, and travel expenses to live in New York City for the summer. I was able to focus on cultivating my experience and making the most out of the in-person opportunity to network, become familiar with the office, attend team off-sites, and get a taste of what it will be like to live as a working adult. 

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellow program pushes you to be better than your best and without that program, I would not have had the resume experiences I do or the drive to be better than my best.

I really enjoyed my internship at Deloitte as a Risk and Financial Advisory Intern. I was able to work with federal government agencies and learn more about the consulting and corporate environment. My work as an intern was very rewarding as I was able to see my work be used in real time and how meaningful it was to make an impact so large.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My internship experience has taught me more of the inner workings of government and government agencies. There is a lot of moving parts and departments that require a lot of nuance and flexibility that I never fully understood until working at Deloitte. I also was able to utilize my data analytics knowledge to help further research, meetings, and slide decks.

This experience has significantly impacted my future career goals as I was offered a full-time job as an Analyst for the Summer of 2023. Working as an intern has made me realize that this is something similar I would like to further my career in. I knew I wanted to work within government but not too publicly (such as running for office). I enjoy the behind the scenes work and find it very validating so being within the Consulting world has really opened my eyes to the possibilities of what I can do within government.

The College of the Liberal Arts Career Center provided many webinars and information sessions to help me learn about Deloitte as a company, and how to embellish my resumes and documents for when applying to jobs.

This summer I took part in the Consultant Development Program at Ernst & Young (EY), serving in the Government and Public Sector as a People Advisory Services intern. Through this role, I collaborated with clients to address complex people-related issues and provided support through a variety of core competencies including change management, organizational design, workforce planning, and culture transformation.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I have gathered from my classes at Penn State. Particularly, I was able to use my academic background in human resources to address issues relevant to government clients. By exploring different aspects of human resources in a professional setting, I better understand my educational goals from both a research and coursework lens.

This experience impacted my career goals by showing me the potential responsibilities of an entry-level consultant. As someone who has held a variety of career ambitions, it was important to gain experience in consulting to know whether it was a profession I wanted to pursue. After a rewarding summer, I plan to join EY next year in their D.C. office upon graduating.

The College of Liberal Arts has allowed me to explore a variety of interests without feeling pressured to commit to a particular discipline. This variety in coursework has helped me to develop strong critical thinking skills which are applicable to a career in consulting. All of my advisors have been supportive of my ambitions both in and out of the classroom; they have provided me with the tools and resources I need to succeed as a student at Penn State.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program has supported me in all of my ambitions whether they be related to research, study abroad, or internships. Through the Paterno Fellows Program, I learned about the Chapel Executive Internship Program. The generous funding from Mr. and Mrs. Chapel supported my move to Washington, D.C. to complete my internship in person.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

As a finance intern at Novartis, I supported the Government Pricing team within Managed Markets Finance. While working with a team split between East Hanover, NJ, and Hyderabad, India, I learned about the pharmaceuticals price types and the mechanisms and processes for reporting them to the government. Outside of my work on the Government Pricing team, I collaborated with 14 other interns on a final project to present to executive leadership at the conclusion of the summer. We constructed a Wall Street View of the company as well as presenting our own feedback on the current job market.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience impacted me in a unique when academically. The internship takes the fundamentals of finance and economics, which I am learning at Penn State, and applies them in a niche way very specific to the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. I was continually challenged to learn new skills, information, and processes and directly apply them to critical company submissions and projects. My academics at Penn State served as the launchpad for this internship to build on my learnings and specialize me to work in the industry.

My experience profoundly impacted my career goal and my career paths. As someone who manages a rare condition, I have long been interested in the pharmaceutical industry. Now, with an internship experience under my belt, I feel confident and excited to be working towards this goal. My internship and work at Novartis has certified and deepened my passion to work in an industry focused on improving and extending patient lives. By discovering many more niche areas of pharmaceuticals, I can return to Penn State with a unique perspective and work towards preparing myself for a future career.

The College of Liberal Arts helped me to succeed in my experience through enrichment funding to support the expenses of my internship. By accepting an opportunity away from home, I was met with unique challenges such as arranging housing, transportation, food, and other necessities to live and work away from home in addition to weekly commuting. Through the Chapel Executive Internship Program, this funding helped to overcome all of these challenges and allow me to reap the benefits of my program. With the additional funding, I can invest in myself and my future to expand my career goals.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

During Summer 2023, I had the chance to work as a Risk Management Intern at Swiss Re. Swiss Re is a Fortune 500 that is a leader in the reinsurance market. Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, the company has multiple offices worldwide and I was part of the Americas branch which is headquartered in Armonk, New York. The Americas Risk Management team serves the company in multiple positions to assess, manage, and evaluate different risks that could threaten the company's assets of any kind.

How did this experience impact you academically?

The experience allowed me to connect my studies with real-life events. We assess many kinds of risks that could harm the company's assets, and some of these risks were part of my academic and theoretical studies. I have learned in many courses how war events, biological threats, financial crises, and other risks, could harm the economy in general, but we didn't dive deep into the practical part where companies and business owners take action in order to avoid such risks and how to minimize the risk and the cost of the risk. The experience allowed me to discover the tools used and the actions taken to deal with different kinds of threats and risks that could produce harm to the economy.

The experience showed me what the market looks like and what skills I need to develop in order to compete for similar jobs. The dynamic of the job market is better explained when you enter the market and get a taste what it looks like. In addition, the exposure I had through the internship allowed me to specify my interests and build upon my future career goals.

The staff has been very helpful and gave me continuous support. I found out about the opportunity by attending one of the events organized by the college. The staff followed up with me after the event and helped me prepare my application. After I finished the interviews and got the offer I applied for the Chapel Executive Internship, my career coach advised me to apply, I am grateful that I have been selected for this award which allowed me to have a better experience throughout the internship.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

My intern experience spanned over 10 weeks. Over that time, I had the opportunity to be a part of the Liquidity and Investment Advisory team. I worked with clients to obtain funding that can then be used for lending side of the bank. I was able to work on multiple projects throughout the summer, ranging from client proposals to automating the monthly reporting data using Microsoft PowerBI.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I believe that this experience has taught me how to be more focused and resilient. Both of these skills can be applied to academics as well as the business world. Having these skills with better my time management, handling tough assignments, and a lot of other difficult aspects of college.

It was a wonderful experience, I got to learn all of the ins and outs of the financial technology world. I also managed to make many connections that will be useful for me in the future, as well as friends and role models. It was a large internship program so we had many students from multiple universities and countries. I worked with the enterprise department of Halo, I was able to shadow people whose I might work in the future and experience their day to day lifestyle. 

How did this experience impact you academically?

It has made me more aware of what kind of skills are needed in such big companies. It also taught me a lot about the financial technology world and finance world in general. Seeing and going to meetings as well as taking multiple courses to enhance my financial literacy was an invaluable experience for me.
