This summer, I had the amazing opportunity to work as a Solutions Consulting Intern with Adobe's Experience Cloud! Adobe offers a full suite of products to enhance a company's marketing efforts. This internship helped illuminate the full scope of Adobe's Experience Cloud products. Through mentorship and shadowing, I saw firsthand how Cloud Solutions Consultants show businesses how Adobe can be a bridge between businesses and customers, providing customers with an individualized experience. I was able to apply this knowledge through various presentations aimed at identifying and solving business problems in the retail sector with Adobe products!

How did this experience impact you academically?

As a Cloud Solutions Consultant Intern, I got a close look at the background work that goes into pitching products to clients. This meant meeting clients to understand their business challenges and pitching solutions with Adobe Experience Cloud products. This process can easily be translated into presentations within Penn State classrooms!

How will this experience impact your career goals?

I have always wanted to work in tech, and my internship with Adobe helped me achieve that. The idea of participating in an industry that is always changing and advancing is really exciting to me! In the future, I would love to work more closely with emerging technologies through roles such as Product Management.

The College of Liberal Arts has helped me immensely to ensure I got the full in-person experience for my internship! I was lucky enough to get an internship offer for New York City, a city with a notoriously expensive cost of living. The College of Liberal Arts enrichment funds program helped fund housing and transportation for the summer, allowing me to meet my team face to face and learn more about the city of New York.

My experience with Boalsburg Heritage Museum has been very helpful. I worked with various different aspects of the museum, whether it be social media promotion, working with artifacts, or helping with events. I met amazing people and gained a passion for museum work. This internship showed me what I want to do in my career and crafted connections for me to get there.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I learned how to multitask and stay motivated during projects as well as how to put up installations with artifacts. I learned how to use my knowledge of history in conjunction with hands-on tasks and promotional efforts.

This summer I interned at Minitab as a Talent Acquisition Intern. In my role, I was able to gain hands on experience in recruiting, program organization, and interviewing.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My experience at Minitab this summer has impacted me academically by providing me with various opportunities to see how my class learnings are applied in the real world. For instance, I was able to pull upon my learnings from employment law to understand what questions can be asked in an interview. Minitab has provided me with an environment full of opportunities to grow my knowledge and positive team members who are always willing to answer questions.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience will impact my career goals as Minitab has shown me the type of company I want to work for. I was shown what an employee focused culture looks like and found that culture is one I want to stick with. Working for a company that truly values your health and work progress has been a life changing experience.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Together with a cohort of other Penn State students and a team of faculty members, I journeyed around the city of Rome and the surrounding area in order to explore the culture of Ancient Rome and to see landmarks I've studied in history courses for years. We learned about ancient economics, politics, and everyday life through ruins and archaeological excavations.

How did this experience impact you academically?

It was phenomenal being able to finally explore in-person the sites and buildings I've been learning about for years. It's one thing to read about something in a book, but it's a whole other experience to be able to say you stood in the middle of the Roman Forum or looked out over Capitoline Hill. It gave me perspective on information I already knew that I wouldn't have gotten without the experience.

I believe that this experience has given me a more worldly view, which is vital for being an effective editor as you're meant to be constantly on the lookout for the next new thing in literature.

The enrichment fund I received from the College of the Liberal Arts allowed me to undertake this experience without worrying about the financial burden. The faculty involved in the program--all members of the CAMS department--also helped to make this experience unforgettable with their knowledge and expertise.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program informed me of this opportunity through the newsletter that they send out weekly during the school year. Although I don't remember this exact program being featured, there was a link to the CAMS study abroad page, which is where I found this program.

I completed an internship at the Center for Virtual and Material Studies (CVMS). I was responsible for cataloging and researching the Theatre Department's vintage clothing collection. CVMS hopes to create an exhibition on flax and linen and digitize the vintage clothing collection so it is more accessible to the public.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, I believe I have significantly improved my research skills. I feel more confident in finding primary sources, using library resources, and deciding the reliability of a source.

This internship has helped me explore and improve my professional skills. I was able to create accession numbers, create an exhibition, and learn about the care of textiles, as well as the construction of clothing. I feel prepared for future internships.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I traveled to the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica where I spent 10 days at the Piro research station with Osa Conservation. I learned about and practiced methods such as sexing primates, using camera traps, estimating population density, and habitat measurement in the rainforest. I also participated in lectures and article discussions regarding primate behavior, primate taxonomy, conservation methods, and observational methods. The primates we studied in the Osa were spider monkeys, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and white-faced capuchins. During my stay I was also able to participate in sea turtle egg rescue/relocation to protect turtles from predation. Traveling to and from the Osa, I visited a zoo focused on wild animal rehabilitation, observed dolphins in the Golfo Dulce, and toured a sustainable chocolate plantation in Puerto Jimenez.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This study abroad experience provided me with a field research experience, adding to my research skills. I increased my knowledge base regarding primates and conservation. Furthermore, I participated in a hands-on learning experience I would be unable to be a part of on campus.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

Gaining this field experience in Costa Rica reinforced my career goals in the sense that it confirmed that I want to work in the field. Previously I had only guessed at what I wanted to pursue in the future, and now I have more certainty that I want to pursue a career in the realm of primates and conservation efforts. In addition, this experience adds to my resume which can help me get an internship working with animals in the future. Many applications in the animal behavior field require some animal experience, and studying abroad with DANTA has opened doors for me.

The College of Liberal Arts has helped me succeed in this study abroad experience by providing enrichment funding which enabled me to be able to travel to Costa Rica, for which I am immensely grateful. Without the enrichment funds I received, it would have been significantly more difficult for me to reach my goal to study abroad.

As a Judicial Intern for the Middlesex County Courthouse, I got to work under The Honorable Judge Thomas McCloskey. I was able to shadow his law clerk, sit in on hearings and trials, and was given the opportunity to conduct my own legal research.

How did this experience impact you academically?

To be a Judicial Intern as an undergraduate student is an immense honor. Since I do not have any legal qualifications or law school experience under my belt yet, I was trusted to put forth my best effort while working alongside extremely intelligent individuals. This experience will set me years ahead of my law school classmates.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I spent six weeks studying both the psychology of religion and cross-cultural psychology while becoming immersed in the Greek culture in the city of Athens. I was also able to visit other cities, towns, and islands throughout the country of Greece to explore the intricacies of cultures even within one country.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience allowed my to complete two classes for my major program, as well as gain skills of how to learn in new spaces and environments in addition to learning through a more hands on experience. Academically, I am much better off because of this program. I enjoyed taking both a 200-level and a 400-level psychology class in an area where the content could so easily be applied to my surroundings.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

Throughout my trip, I was able to meet multiple professionals both in my field of study and outside of my field of study. By meeting these people and interacting with them and their work, I was able to learn which fields I could likely envision myself in and which I could not. I also gained a better understanding of how some professions in my field are treated cross-culturally, such as social workers which are often underfunded and overworked. Regardless, their work is so important that I believe I may pursue that option within my career to help others.

The College of Liberal Arts advertised this program through study abroad fairs which helped my find it and understand what the program entailed prior to going. They helped me succeed by providing enrichment funds to me when I would have otherwise not been able to justify the cost of the trip. Every little bit helps and the college definitely made and impact in my financial ability to succeed in my study abroad experience.

During my internship, I supported the transition to new database platform, Microsoft Azure, by migrating key reports and finding opportunities to eliminate redundancies in data. I analyzed trends and reviewed system algorithms to identify inefficiencies. I processed and visualized data in Excel and Tableau for employee retention. I also created senior-level views of operations driven reports in Tableau based on SQL to allow decision-makers to clearly see trends and understand recurring issues.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I was able to learn my weakness and it reassured me about what to do in my future career. I was also able to see how things that we learned from school worked/used in real business situation.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

As a Public Safety Aide on patrol, my main responsibility was assisting in the transportation of arrestees that have committed a criminal offense to the jail facility in Ocean City. Other responsibilities included the enforcement of civil ordinances of Ocean City, and assisting police officers when they are dispatched to criminal or civil matters. This ranged from a noise complaint to incidents where a domestic assault occurred.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience impacted me academically by allowing me to have a stronger comprehension of the reasonings behind people's intention to commit crimes. Being able to share the personal experiences in my various classrooms so long as it relates to the topic at hand will provide me a greater sense of what is being taught by my professors. My experience also reinforced what I have previously learned in my courses, which increased my abilities to perform the tasks.

This experience gave me an insight on how the criminal justice system operates between law enforcement, corrections, and courts, along with the ways in which crime can potentially be mitigated. It gives me the opportunity to provide my own hypothesis. The internship also helped to developed my decision-making and interpersonal skills in which are a necessity in the field crime analysis and intelligence.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

We were immersed in the culture and beauty of Tanzania through game drives and interactions with the Hadzabe and Masaai tribes. We saw many different animals in their natural habitats and got to learn about Tanzanian policies and way of life.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience showed me that academic experiences aren't always about collecting tangible data, like measurements or numbers. We got to learn so much about different animals and cultures through stories, conversations, and oobservations. This experience has taught me the value of forming relationships with people you meet and watching them, animals, and landscapes with an open mind. It's not about what I expect to find, it's about what I am experiencing or observing in the moment.

I enjoyed doing field work in all of the areas of Tanzania that we traveled to. I love how animal observation studies are like puzzles; you have to first watch the animals, figure out specific behaviors that are curious, and then find a way to measure those into variables. Animals in the wild are not confined to any restrictions, so I like that it may not always be easy to figure out how to study them.

Our trip to the Netherlands included visits to prisons, courts, juvenile and mental health facilities, government buildings, as well as many other historical and interesting sites.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience gave me the opportunity to learn about the Dutch criminal justice system and allow me to compare and contrast it to our own. I was able to learn through lectures but also from the stories of people whose lives are impacted by the justice system, which enhanced my overall experience.

This summer, I interned within Deloitte's strategy and analytics offering portfolio. My project was with a high profile Biopharmaceuticals company with a scope stretch 3 independent workstreams. Over the course of the summer I learned many new skills, engaged with our client, and explored the different offerings at Deloitte.

How did this experience impact you academically?

At the conclusion of the internship, I have a newfound appreciation for continuous learning. I've set personal goals to read more nonfiction books and think more critically of what is taught in the classroom.

I worked at a utility company in the technical utility analyst position. I helped file damage claims worth $15 million for clients in a supplier bankruptcy event. I used Excel to create adaptive hedging templates that can be used by over 400 clients for their future electric and natural gas procurements. I also generated around 70 reports on forecasting future electric and natural gas prices calculated across over 7000 data points. It was not only an eye-opening experience, but it also taught me a lot of knowledge that is beyond the range of my academics.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience has refined my knowledge and skills from my classes and put them into practice. I was glad that I could add some value to the organization. The experience also clarified my goals of learning in the future so I will be able to have a better understanding of where to focus during my future studies.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I participated in a Penn State faculty run study abroad experience. I lived with an amazing Spanish host family and took 3 Spanish classes with other Penn State students. My host family helped me develop my Spanish language skills and really understand the culture. As a Penn State group, we took bus trips to several attractions in southern Spain.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I took 3 Spanish courses in 6 weeks which is very demanding. Even though it is a lot to manage, I learned a lot vocab, culture, geography, and history. Academically, taking 3 Spanish courses gets me closer to completing my Spanish major. The other students took their academics seriously, so it was nice to be surrounded by peers pushing you to do better.

Learning Spanish as a second language and studying abroad in a Spanish speaking country are very impressive feats to put on a resume, which should help me in the job market. Being that the Ronda Program is a faculty led program; the Penn State professors were extremely supportive. For example, they organized all our excursions, so students did not ever need to worry about transportation or hotels. The professors also showed us where to set up our cell phones, obtain euros, and buy school materials. The enrichment funds I received from the College of the Liberal Arts were also greatly appreciated.

I worked as a sophomore summer analyst in the Equity Capital Markets division at Bank of America. Throughout my internship, I rotated through two groups: the Strategic Equity Solution Group and Financial Institutions Group.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This role was very market-facing, and I was able to apply several concepts from economics classes I have taken (specifically macroeconomics), like monetary policy, because I had to understand the impact of those ideas in my work.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Within the Youth Service Bureau, I was an intern for Big Brothers Big Sisters. I facilitated reference checks to ensure a high level of safety among new volunteers working with children. I also helped with promoting volunteer opportunities, which allow individuals to mentor a child in the community. I provided assistance with conducting interviews for individuals interested in the program and organized the office space to optimize the workplace.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I had the opportunity to interact with children and get a better sense of how younger children think and behave. As a psychology major, I am very interested in learning about the mind and how that impacts human behavior. Being able to interact with children from different backgrounds and experiences first-hand was an eye-opening experience.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I spent two months this summer working on archaeological excavations at the site of Chiripa in Bolivia. The project investigates the nature of the transition to agriculture in the Taraco Peninsula during the Early Formative Period (1500-800 BCE). Additionally, the project investigates the role, if any, of climate change in this shift to agriculture. I assisted with stratigraphic records with Harris Matrices, artifact collections, dry screening, and total station coordinates. I also spent time assisting in community outreach to initiate other excavation projects around Tarija, Bolivia.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I gained more thorough familiarity with artifact identification and Harris Matrices, which I think are skills that improve mostly through hands-on experience. Additionally, I learned how lithic analysis is carried out, which improved my understanding of the different lithic artifacts and how they are made. I also kept frequent and thorough notes throughout fieldwork on stratigraphy, events, features, and artifacts, giving me an overall bigger-picture-view of how all of our excavations worked together.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

I intend to continue studying archaeology through graduate school. Additionally, I will be assisting in bone isotope analysis using bones collected from this project, to further my learning beyond just fieldwork. Dr. Capriles-Flores, a professor in the Anthropology department, is a co-director of the Taraco Archaeological Project. I took his course last fall on Andean archaeology and then traveled with him to Bolivia for this project. His course provided the foundational knowledge on the region and provided this opportunity for fieldwork. I worked primarily with him throughout the summer, along with the two other co-directors from other universities. Dr. Capriles-Flores and his family provided a lot of safety and support throughout the whole experience. I also received enrichment funds through the College of Liberal Arts which supported me financially, especially for visits to other sites such as Tiwanaku, Padcaya, and Yunchara.

I traveled to the University of Leeds in northern England to study two exciting modules for one month, The English Country House and Reparations for Historical Injustices. I had the opportunity to meet international students from 25 different countries around the world and I experienced adventures in seven different cities and towns in the United Kingdom, including London, Liverpool, and Edinburgh. Even though the program was only a month, I made lifelong friends from around the globe and learned so much about different cultures and myself.

How did this experience impact you academically?

The two modules I took were very eye-opening in different ways. My first course The English Country House- A Social History allowed me to learn about the architecture of country estates and their role in the history of the United Kingdom. My second course Reparations for Historical Injustices focused on global histories of historical injustices, who is owed reparations, who owes those reparations, and what form those reparations should take. In both modules, I had the opportunity to learn about different perspectives from students around the world. Through this experience, I had the privilege of learning about the history of the United Kingdom while I was physically there. Additionally, embedded field trips in the classes allowed me to travel to historic sites, such as Temple Newsam, Castle Howard, and the Royal Albert Docks.

I traveled to Greece to learn more about the religious and historical background of the country. By traveling to different sites, I learned how Greece kickstarted much of what we deem modern civilization and how our culture differs from the Greek culture.

This experience had a significant impact on me academically as I learned a great deal about where we got our start as a civilization. We visited several sites that showed us where historical figures made revolutionary discoveries that impacted how we interact with each other and with knowledge. I also got to learn how another cultures handle mental health, which was extremely eye-opening since that is the primary focus of my future career.

I spent about 3 weeks exploring Rome, Italy with a wonderful group of faculty and students. Our class was able to gain an in-depth knowledge of Roman history through tours of famous sites like the Roman Forum, the Mausoleum of Hadrian, and Trajan's Markets. Our travels also extended outside of the city of Rome with visits to Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, and Florence.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Participating in this study abroad experience has been the highlight of my liberal arts education and has prepared me for future academic success. As a student of history, a hands-on approach is essential to truly comprehending the ancient world. The ability to be amongst archaeological sites strengthens ones understanding of Rome's unique identity and culture. This enriching experience, where I was able to immerse myself in the center of Roman history, has effectively prepared me for future international study.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

For six weeks, I had the opportunity to travel to many cultural hotspots in Greece, both on the mainland and on the surrounding islands. Mainly set in Athens, I studied the psychology of religious belief and cross-cultural psychology. I got to witness the evolution of religious belief first-hand by visiting ancient Greek temples engaging in polytheism and the religious buildings of the Abrahamic monotheistic religions (churches, synagogues, mosques). What I was learning in class directly reflected what I was engaging with in my physical environment. Also, cross-cultural psychology was very applicable when navigating a culture as rich as Greek culture.

How did this experience impact you academically?

These classes, even if not taken abroad, are quite life-changing and eye opening, as you see the psychological mechanisms behind culture and identity. As a psychology major and a sociology major, this opportunity was great hands-on experience in social psychology and sociology. While I loved every moment of in-class academics, most of my learning was outside of class, discovering my own identity and place within cultures.

I started my collegiate studies as only a psychology major, who was more interested in the cognitive science portion of psychology. As I developed my interests, I realized that I was more interested in social psychology, so I decided to work towards a second major in sociology. This experience has even furthered my passion for sociology, and I now favor sociology over psychology. The interactions with so many different people from across the globe had a great social influence over me. So, my career goals are now more oriented towards being a sociologist in some capacity.

My academic advisor, Rachel Zimmerman, helped me tremendously throughout the entire process. While navigating the education abroad website, she helped me to find a program, and she provided me with a recommendation. My psychology research lab advisor, Dr. Terri Vescio, also helped me along the way and provided some insight for me. The College of Liberal Arts provided me with enrichment funds, which I was very appreciative of and it took a big burden off of my shoulders.

Throughout my time as a Special Prosecutions intern, I regularly attended trials and hearings to document case details with fellow interns and reported findings to assistant district attorneys. I collaborated daily with other interns to locate, catalog, and organize files for various court hearings. I also participated in an intern run in mock trial experiences for special prosecutions cases such as child endangerment, domestic violence and sexual crimes.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My experience as an intern at the Westchester County District attorney's office has confirmed my interest in becoming an attorney. And at this time, I plan to eventually attend law school.

Throughout the course of this five week study abroad trip, I was able to experience Ireland's rich culture. Traveling from Dublin, to Ballyvaughan, to Galway, I experienced its cities, countryside, unique landscapes, museums, and festivals. Through the lens of art and literature, I gained an understanding of the country's history and culture, both of which its people are so proud of.

How did this experience impact you academically?

During this trip, we visited many museums, historical landmarks, and had many artists, authors, and climate experts come speak to us. Being able to see these important sites in person and learn about them and their history first hand was incredibly enriching. Additionally, hearing from such established and successful authors and artists was extremely inspiring.

I hope to enter the field of publishing after graduating. I served as a commercial and corporate banking intern at PNC during the summer of 2022. Throughout the internship program, I participated in shadowing, mentoring, and projects that furthered my understanding of underwriting and sales. Some of my responsibilities include going to networking events and client calls, assisting in underwriting bank deals, and performing company research and financial analysis. Overall, I was able to build long-term connections while improving myself not only on the technical side but also holistically.

This experience allowed me to see how academic theories and classroom learning are applied in real-life scenarios. It makes the classes that I am taking more meaningful. With that, I am able to choose more lessons that are fitting to my interest and learn more in my college career.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I had an amazing experience studying abroad in Cádiz. Being able to spend a month in this beautiful peninsula with 14 new friends was such a memorable and wonderful opportunity. I loved being able to spend time at the beach after classes, experience the local food scene, and immerse myself in the Spanish language. From a jazz festival, to sunset-swimming in the ocean, to a paella cooking class - there's always something to do. I also loved going to Granada and touring the Alhambra. I would highly recommend this study abroad opportunity to anyone who's considering it!

How did this experience impact you academically?

Studying abroad in Cádiz helped to immerse me in Spanish-speaking culture. I feel more confident as a Spanish major now than ever before. I have loved all of my Spanish classes at Penn State, but being able to speak in Spanish every day with anyone I meet makes a big difference in my ability to speak and comprehend the language.

Being conversationally fluent in Spanish is incredibly important to me. I think it is important to break down language barriers. This program is a faculty-led program from the Spanish department. My professors were incredibly helpful, thoughtful, and caring throughout the entire trip (and even beforehand). I am so grateful for all the time and effort they put into creating such a wonderful trip and educational opportunity.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

For six weeks this summer, I was a legal intern for the law firm Bressler, Amery & Ross, P.C. at their Florham Park, New Jersey office. The internship was structured so that I had the opportunity to work directly with a number of the firm’s attorneys from different practice areas, offering hands-on, practical experience working in a law firm. During my six week tenure at Bressler, I learned much about the legal profession, and I was connected with two mentors who guided me through the internship and discussed the law school application process with me.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My internship required me to frequently conduct research and write memos, often on complex, nuanced legal questions. As such, I had ample opportunity to employ many of the skills I have learned at Penn State, from critical thinking to logical reasoning to technical writing. This experience showed me that my writing skills–-which I largely attribute to my Communication Arts and Sciences major–-have valuable, real-world applications. In that sense, I believe seeing the transferability of these skills will likely only drive me further in my pursuit of my classes.

I have not always been interested in pursuing a career in the law [I previously saw myself as wanting to study graduate mathematics]; however, my time at Penn State thus far has really opened my eyes to the many different fields of advanced study from which I can choose. I believe my writing and analysis skills from my communication major, combined with my logic and problem solving skills from my mathematics and statistics studies, will prepare me well for law school. At the end of the day, I truly love solving problems and helping people–-and, in part from my experience this summer, I believe being a lawyer would allow me to make use of my skills and education to do as much.

The College of Liberal Arts provided financial support towards my experience this summer. In finding housing in New Jersey and planning for my summer internship, I was all too aware of just how much such an experience can cost. I spent 2 months taking intensive Modern Standard Arabic classes at the Qalam wa Lawh Center for Arabic Studies in Rabat, Morocco. In addition to my classes, I studied Arabic calligraphy and Moroccan history and culture, volunteered at an organization working with refugees, and explored many parts of Morocco.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience improved my Arabic a lot as well as provided me with greater insight into the politics and history of the North African region and how it differs from that of the Middle East despite often sharing an Arab identity.

This summer I worked as a Corporate Sponsorship Manager and Game Day Operations Intern for Morris Elite Soccer Club. It was a minor league soccer team with players and staff from all over the world! I managed the production of multiple soccer matches including logistics and marketing while overseeing ticket operations.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Being in a classroom learning and hearing about what you are studying is a lot different than being in the office and actually applying those concepts. What I read about in my textbooks about roles in a company I was able to experience firsthand while working in the office. I got to put my knowledge from the classroom to the test.

This summer, I interned at Agile Rainmakers, a high impact business development consulting and advisory firm based in Chicago’s gold coast. Over the course of two months, I worked alongside five other interns on various projects for the eight clients we had. There was value in the diversity of industries we were able to work with as well as in the opportunity to work very closely with the CEOs of each company with minimal overhead from our boss. This allowed us to see and understand the value that our work was adding to each client and their company.

How did this experience impact you academically?

It was very empowering to be able to hit the ground running in the way that we did through our interactions with each client as we led meetings and exercised effective communication as well as time management. This internship has allowed me to discover what I look for in terms work life balance, which will be useful in the remainder of my undergraduate education as well.

In terms of future plans, I was not expecting to like consulting as much as I did, and I now see this as a possible career path. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

For a month, I interned with the Office of the Special Prosecutor - Ghana (OSP). The OSP is an independent specialized agency responsible for investigating specific cases of alleged or suspected corruption, or corruption-related offences involving Ghanaian public officers and individuals in the private sector. With this opportunity, I was able to attend anti-corruption conferences and summits, sit in on meetings relating to Ghana’s future, contribute to anti-corruption campaigns, and attend court hearings and cases.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My internship helped me understand why critical thinking, consistency, and passion are instrumental to a successful career. These tenets of success are what I am bringing back with me to school when I focus on closing out my undergraduate career.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Penn State students work with students from the University of Bucharest to study climate change and develop skills in navigating complex, inter-disciplinary challenges. The students visit research sites along the Danube River; work side-by-side with scientists to carry out undergraduate research on water issues confronting the waterway; and advocate for change with politicians, international agencies, and university leaders. By the end of the field practicum, students present potential solutions for the sustainability of the Danube River and Delta per the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (UN SDGs) at an international Undergraduate Research Symposium held at the University of Bucharest.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience challenged me academically through research and group work. It helped me expand my understanding of topics such as ethical consumption, international politics, and how many stakeholders are required to work together to make a change. I also learned research and analysis techniques surrounding GIS and spatial analysis. Finally, I gained interpersonal skills due to the small group work and exposure to different cultures. This includes selecting virtual meeting times that are fair for people on both sides of the world and the importance of making an effort to learn about a new culture such as through language or food.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience has taught me to stand up for environmental justice in whatever career path I pursue. Although I enjoyed learning about STEM, I probably will not pursue a career as a scientist. However, the sense of duty I gained for the environment has shown me that I must be an advocate in whatever space I’m in. This could be advising my future company to buy solar panels or becoming an environmental lawyer. It is on all of us to take care of the Earth that takes such good care of us.

The Paterno Fellows helped me attain this enrichment funding as well as helped the acceptance of my application. It was included on my resume to show my academic commitment. For the entirety of the summer, I had the pleasure of working as a credit analyst with the Global Corporate & Investment Banking team out of the Chicago Office for Bank of America. This specialized team of underwriters aimed to structure loan facilities for companies large enough to earn over $2 billion in yearly revenue for the US & Canada. The Credit and Wholesale Banking summer analyst program was designed to offer candidates the opportunity to work closely with the front-line banking sales team across various lines of Business and Specialized products to help clients succeed. The business puts an emphasis on innovation and digital technology to continue to deliver for clients both locally and internationally.

How did this experience impact you academically?

As a member of the Integrated Masters and Bachelor's in accounting program for Penn State, it felt so fulfilling to see all the late nights of studying for exams on precise accounting metrics finally pay off in an applicable setting. I was able to hop right into financial statements and have a firm grasp on at least a few of the financial calculations used to evaluate the risk level and profitability of companies.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

Aside from being offered the chance to return to work full-time upon graduation, one of the greatest parts of the experience was being able to work alongside and learn from the brightest minds in the banking industry. Every day I would learn something new, and the seniors around were never hesitant to answer even the most nuanced and convoluted of questions I could spew out at any given time. It was truly inspiring to be mentored by people who had gradually become masters of their craft. I aim to leverage their advice on life and careers to make better decisions for myself in the future. Additionally, I plan on staying connected with these mentors for other possible opportunities down the road.

The Chapel Executive Internship Scholarship was quintessential to my being able to complete this internship. Without any family or friends in the city of Chicago, where the internship was held, the only short-term housing options available to me were charging exorbitant prices that summer. However, through the selfless generosity of the Chapel family, I had enough financial support to live in a safe location near the office and direct all my focus only towards succeeding at this rare to come by chance at a burgeoning career in banking.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I studied Shakespeare and Virginia Woolf for five weeks in London. For our Shakespeare class, we read Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, King Lear, and The Tempest, seeing Much Ado About Nothing and King Lear at the reconstructed Globe Theatre. We lived and studied in Bloomsbury, home of the famous Bloomsbury Group, Virginia Woolf's club of artists and bohemian public figures. Field trips included trips to Charleston and Monk's Houses (Woolf and her sister Vanessa Bell's country homes), York, Kew Gardens, Sissinghurst and Knole houses, the country homes of Vita Sackville-West. My own excursions in England included trips to Bath and the White Cliffs of Dover.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I am an English major, but this trip allowed me to experience other art forms that are not simply literature. Studying Shakespeare requires analysis of theatrical choices, which I had never done in depth. For each play we read, we watched a film or play version after reading it. We always had a performance analysis assignment, which allowed me to study theater as well as literature. Dr. Chris Reed, an art history scholar, was our Virginia Woolf professor. We not only studied Woolf, but her sister Vanessa Bell, and the rest of the Bloomsbury Group's famous art pieces. I gained more of an appreciation for visual art and how it can intersect with literature through Woolf and Bell's work together.

Like all English courses, these two classes I took in London required a lot of reading and analysis of that reading. My career goals are in law, so English classes like this prepare me for law school.

I was fortunate enough to receive Liberal Arts Enrichment Funds to support this experience. I was able to use this money to cover my travel expenses and food while I was abroad. I also owe Taylor Hare, PhD candidate at Penn State and my Shakespeare professor, and Dr. Chris Reed, my Virginia Woolf professor for helping me succeed academically in London.

I have taken two prior Shakespeare classes at Penn State, which were both honors classes. I was extremely prepared for this class due to my experience studying Shakespeare before, which would not have been possible without the Paterno Fellows Program.

This summer, I spent five weeks in the Netherlands between the cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam, focusing on social and criminal justice. We interviewed victims of sex trafficking, correction officers, sex workers, social workers, and many more people from various backgrounds and walks of life. As part of a sub program, I also got to visit the International Criminal Court and watch a hearing, and well as do a model UN exercise.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Being in the Netherlands on this program counted as a supporting class for my major, but it was so much more than that. It reinvigorated my passion for learning, reminding me of why I chose to study human rights in the first place, through emotional, first-hand experiences.

This experience made me realize that within my human rights focus in GLIS, I want to focus on women's rights. Because of this, I have decided to pursue a Masters in my future.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This past summer I had the incredible experience of studying abroad in London, where I learned about Virginia Woolf and Shakespeare as well as the city where they lived. I not only read books from both of these authors, but had the incredible opportunity of attending multiple performances at the Globe and other theaters as well as sites related to our curriculum. I visited Vanessa Bell’s house, Virginia Woolf’s house, York (including Yorkminster Cathedral), as well as Knoll and various castles. In addition to bonding with my classmates, I became familiar with the city around me, immersing myself in various cultural neighborhoods and sites, like the British Museum and Westminster Cathedral.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This opportunity to study abroad had an incredible impact on my academic experience. I believe that I would not have truly appreciated Virginia Woolf or Shakespeare if I had not been immersed in London. It was such a worthwhile experience to have the city’s sites augment the curriculum we learned in class. I loved reading “Kew Gardens” by Woolf in Kew Gardens with my classmates, or reading about Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens in “Moments of Being” at both of those locations. The ability to immerse myself in the city that so deeply influenced these authors truly inspired me in my intellectual experience as well.

I have such a deeper appreciation for literature and the intricacies of writing than I did prior to my abroad experience. It has awakened a passion within me to pursue the literary arts more deeply and fervently. Woolf’s class in particular revealed a passion for philosophy in me that I never fully realized. I met friends in London who study philosophy at King’s College and I am now considering studying philosophy there after completing my undergraduate education! Overall, this opportunity to broaden my intellectual horizons has been one of my greatest blessings and I am so grateful for this opportunity. I have made lifelong friends, both Penn State students and those studying full time in London, who all continue to inspire me to pursue my dreams.

The College of Liberal Arts graciously assisted me through enrichment funds to attend the Literary London program this past summer. Without this financial assistance, I would not have had this life changing experience abroad and would have very different plans for my future. Through the enrichment fund, I truly feel that I have a more wholistic perspective of my life, the world, and my intellectual pursuits. It was through this aid that I have made lifelong connections and memories that I never could have imagined. I truly immersed myself in London through my abroad experience, visiting a wide variety of museums (the Churchill War Rooms was my favorite!), churches (the Oratory was easily my favorite!), parks and gardens (loved Regent’s Park!), and met so many friends through the University College London’s Newman Catholic club, who I still keep in touch with today! Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Throughout my study abroad experience, I was able to be immersed in the Mexican Culture while improving my language skills. I had a fantastic time visiting archeological sites, museums, and the beautiful waterfalls of Puebla, Mexico. I formed life-long bonds with the other students that went on the trip as well as my amazing host family. This trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I will never, ever forget.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, I was able to learn about the history and literature of Mexico in classroom settings with Penn State Professors. This allowed us to have some familiarity with our classes and feel comfortable because we were around Penn State staff. We were engrossed in a theater class with a Professor from the IBERO college that we took classes at, which was an amazing hands-on experience like none of the classes I have taken in the US.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

In the future, I would love to work with the Spanish language in correlation with young children. Whether that be by teaching Spanish or simply working with students that speak Spanish, this is something that I would love to do. During this abroad experience, we took a trip to an indigenous school where the students taught us about their projects and how they learn. This made me want to be immersed in their culture even more and emphasized my desire to work with Spanish-speaking children in the future.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer, I interned at Novartis in their Managed Markets Finance division. I was assigned to the Medicaid team, in which I worked to set up government contracts and conduct financial analyses of those contracts. Each day, I learned something new, and specific projects I worked on include generics competitor benchmarking and forecasting profitability of different Medicaid bid decisions.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship impacted me in many ways academically and professionally. At the start, I learned high-level concepts in healthcare and finance, but by the end, I was able to combine skills to solve real problems and communicate those solutions effectively. Furthermore, I was able to delve deeper into healthcare and more fully appreciate the complexities of how a drug gets to the consumer. As Novartis is a very large company, I also took advantage of learning from others outside of Medicaid: finance-wise, from product strategy to treasury, and product-wise, from hematology to oncology.

I worked with Chairman Matthew Bradford’s Democratic Appropriations Committee developing analysis, materials, and data visualizations on the record $45+ billion state budget and other bills. I wrote 4 original bills on education, insurance, the Auditor General’s subpoena authority & health care oversight, and public assistance and 3 amendments on agriculture. I presented my public assistance bill in the Majority Caucus Room of the House of Representatives and am now coordinating introduction of my legislation by Representatives. I met with Governor Wolf, Speaker Cutler, Senator Argall, Auditor General DeFoor and Deputy Auditor Generals, and interviewed Representatives Freeman, Quinn, Zabel, and DelRosso.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience provided the real-world basis for classroom concepts, along with the ability to see how theory does (and does not) line up with practice. Now returning to the classroom, I have such a unique perspective having been in "the room where it happened" and seen "how the sausage gets made" to contribute to discussions, ask questions with my experience in mind, and support the overall learning environment.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

I’ve long been interested in government and public service, but was unsure where I could fit it best with my unique background and if I would enjoy it as much as I hoped. The experience showed me first-hand the positive impact I could have on people through public policy and how public service is a rewarding viable career option.  This in-person experience allowed me to build the supportive professional network empowering me to pursue my ideal career using both of my academic disciplines and service at its heart. 

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

The College of Liberal Arts offered the critical funding support I needed in order to afford and be able to pursue this once in a lifetime opportunity. My classes provided the basic foundational context for me to be able to support my team, ask thought provoking questions, and understand the role that individuals, coalitions, and the institution play in the process of shaping public policy. While practice certainly varies from the textbooks, thereby making the Fellowship all the more incredible of a learning experience, the College of Liberal Arts and my political science professors prepared me well for success.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program in conjunction with Schreyer offered a breeding ground for broad based intellectual curiosity that would serve me well in my Fellowship. Learning for the sake of learning, building a more global and diverse perspective, and being an ethical leader with civic engagement top of mind were critical pieces that made me a far more effective public servant as I crafted policy, developed analysis, and thought critically in an open-ended environment.

I had a great internship experience at the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office. I was assigned to the Pre-Trials and Diversion Unit but often found myself learning from all of the Assistant District Attorneys as well as the District Attorney, Kevin Steele. Within my unit, I was given tasks, such as collaborating with the ARD office, listening and documenting prison calls, attending court with the Assistant District Attorneys I was assigned to and communicated with victims and Troopers within the county. Outside of my unit, I had the opportunity to visit the Montgomery County Youth Center and the evidence room, participate in a police ride along with the Upper Merion Police Department, attend various Lunch and Learns, and sit in on Pre-Trial conferences.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Throughout my academic experience at Penn State, I have taken a variety of courses pertaining to the Criminology field. However, having the opportunity to use what I have learned in the classroom and apply it to a real world experience is extremely rewarding. Throughout this semester, I have found many to ways apply my internship experience to my classes and share the knowledge that I gained with my fellow classmates.

I chose to peruse a Criminology degree at Penn State because I had aspirations to go to law school. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Throughout the summer, I served as a Membership and Equity Fellow for the League of Women Voters Pennsylvania. I focused on building a pilot program for Universities in South East PA to offer voter registration and educational resources. I also edited the Equity page resources and built the Equity Initiative of the League; this initiative provides DEI resources and implementation information to local leagues to better equip them to advocate for underrepresented communities. Finally, I served on the by-laws committee, which helped me to expand my knowledge of the operational side of non-profits.

This experience has improved my writing, research, and communication skills. During my experience, I wrote many guides that local leagues would widely utilize. I also did enormous amounts of research into existing college civic action plans and DEI Policies. These experiences have made me a better and more consistent writer and communicator, serving me during my intensive writing courses as a political science major.

As a Political Science major, I am currently exploring many career options, including law school, graduate school, government, and non-profit work. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

Academically, my study abroad experience revolved around a diverse selection of topics and experiences that are deemed criminal and/or deviant either by American or Dutch standards. While exploring such topics daily, I was exposed to the Dutch legal and justice systems' approaches to dealing with such processes and, consequently, I was able to compare my own knowledge about the American systems and how we might have a differing approach. Socially, my study abroad experience allowed me to meet a wonderful group of students, both from Penn State and not, as well as instructors and others whom I may never have met if not for leaving the United States.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience truly allowed me to leave a space of what I thought I had known in the realm of criminology and form a completely different understanding of the study. I now have a broader set of experiences from which I can compare new information and derive different opinions from. Since my study abroad experience, how I view topics and experiences that are deviant has altered and I now make an effort to understand the "why" behind such happenings and for what reasons it may be deviant, criminal, or even not criminal. It has become clear to me that this experience has allowed my ability to learn to evolve and to not be fearful of challenging what I may have already known.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

I have been interested in pursuing a career in law and this experience has only deepened my interest in doing so. As I had stated previously, I found it so interesting to see what is considered deviant and not and how this factored into the legal system. Knowing that the legal system evolves, I want to be able to see these changes in how society views what is deviant and if the law will reflect public views. I think being exposed to this will allow me to understand society on a deeper level, which is something that has always intrigued me.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer I was an intern for the non-profit organization Out of The Cold, which is a low-barrier Homeless Shelter located in downtown State College. I assisted with the intake of guests, shadowed case managers, organized an initiative for better health and nutrition, planned events, aided with chores and upkeep of the shelter, as well as compiled community resources. My day-to-day experience was never the same as I learned to manage different needs, priorities, and occasionally conflicts. I had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people who shared their adversities, wishes, and stories with me.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I was able to have hands-on experience with people who have been formerly incarcerated, as many guests served sentences at the local jails within State College and had no place to return to after their release. Through this internship, I personally learned about the long lasting consequences and hardship of having a criminal record, such as barriers to getting a job, prevalence of untreated mental illness, and oftentimes being in active addiction. This experience opened my eyes to the need for more transitional support programs for people that are coming out of prison.

This experience solidified my future interests in criminal justice with a specialization in community outreach, reintegration, and prison reform. It also deepened my understanding of the prison-to-homelessness pipeline that affects so many people within our local communities, and the lack of resources available for those who struggle in reentering society. I am determined to spread awareness of this issue and find the means to create a smoother transition back into society as well as reduce recidivism through providing adequate healthcare, housing, and access to support services.

The College of Liberal Arts aided my experience by providing enrichment funding that would help pay for my basic expenses throughout my internship this summer, as my position was unpaid. This greatly alleviated financial stress and allowed me to pursue an opportunity that I was interested in.

Through the Paterno Fellows Program and the Schreyer Honors College I had guidance from my Honors Career Advisor who helped me find this opportunity, and connected me with people who shared my career interests and passions. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

This summer, I interned at Fidelity Investments in Boston, MA as an investment intern in the Asset Management division. I was able to rotate between many different asset classes including equities, fixed income, high income & alternatives, quantitative data, and strategic advisors where I completed research reports, presentations, investment strategies, and financial models. I was able to present my ideas to senior members in the firm including managing directors, portfolio managers, and senior analysts. Moreover, I received intensive training in various finance topics including accounting, valuation, excel, and global asset allocation, and had the chance to network and meet employees in almost every division!

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship has greatly impacted me academically by providing me a vast amount of feedback. After every project and case study, we were given amazing detailed feedback which was monumental in realizing where I needed to improve. All of our presentations had over 50 people watching that were genuinely interested in the work that we did and were eager to provide me with tips and advice for how to improve going forward. Moreover, this internship gave me a huge network that I can always reach out to with anything. Although I am not studying finance at Penn State, this experience has allowed me to broaden my skill set and learn about areas of finance that I would have never been exposed to otherwise.

This internship greatly impacted my career goals as I have established my future career plans and realized that I want to do work in the credit and distressed debt industry. Give us a brief summary of your experience?

My internship experience at ACRP was an amazing hands-on opportunity to learn more about the field of mental health and psychological counseling care. I was able to shadow a variety of professionals, such as BCM/CMs, therapists, psych nurses, psychiatrists, and BHTs. I was even able to earn my certificate to be a BHT-ABA after 40 hours of training. This internship allowed me to work with ASD children and families and obtain an entire new perspective on the importance of social and mental health and the ways in which we can be advocates for clients who seek help.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience was like the missing piece to my education. Everything that I learned in my classes here at Penn State came to life when put in the field--I was able to understand and explore concepts that had been merely theories and case studies in a textbook before this summer. I feel as though my internship has given me a more well-rounded understanding of my field in the real world, and will therefore give me an advantage in my academics because it is more tangible now.

This experience genuinely laid the groundwork for the rest of my career. It gave me the confidence and assurance that I needed that my desired career, being a therapist/counselor, is my calling. By being so young and already having the opportunity to work directly with my community, it gave me all the more passion and determination to further my education and work to be alongside the professionals of mental health someday.

The College of the Liberal Arts, specifically my professors, advisers, and the enrichment fund I was awarded, have been my biggest supports here at Penn State so far. Without the interesting and engaging classes I've been able to take with wonderful professors, I might not even have a passion for psychology at all. My adviser has also helped me succeed with always answering questions and getting me on the right track to have fruitful semesters. And of course, the enrichment fund I was awarded helped aid me through costs of travel, food, and materials all summer during my internship. "It takes a village," and the people of Penn State have been nothing short of that for me.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I stayed in State College this past summer to begin work on my senior thesis, while also submitting my first poster abstract to the Society for Research in Child Development conference. Additionally, I continued work in the Parent-Child Dynamics lab as an undergraduate research assistant. I assisted with running in-person research visits with families. My main role was to lead executive functioning and cognitive tasks with the child of each family. The children were ages 2.5 to 3.25 years old.

How did this experience impact you academically?

I was able to get a head start on my thesis to ensure the topic I chose was the correct fit for me. I also got experience writing my first abstract for a research conference. Lastly, I gained additional knowledge about running research sessions and having to adapt to each family to ensure it all runs smoothly.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

In this experience, I was the editorial assistant for Dr. Jeanmarie Higgins, who is one of the co-editors of "Prompt: A Journal of Theatre Theory, Practice, and Teaching". I worked with her to put together the upcoming issue, Volume II, Issue 4, on "domestic space", in which we pair photos of discarded scenic models with playwrights who write new 1–2 minute plays inspired by their "prompt", the scenic model. I used email correspondence to reach out to our playwrights, people who are professional playwrights and even students here at Penn State, and I organized our Google Drive to allow for it to be inputted into the issue's website easily. I also interned with Dr. Higgins as part of the "International Journal of Education & the Arts", learning about the peer-review and editing process in academic publishing.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience asked me to become acquainted with the system that is used to create new knowledge: peer-review. I was able to better my ability to read theatre criticism, by reading about educators' ways of teaching drama. This also furthered my understanding of what knowledge can look like, by seeing artistic creations used as products of knowledge.

I want to pursue research related to theatre and literature in my future, so this experience allowed me to have my first brush with academic publishing. The journal, "International Journal for Education & the Arts", also specifically focuses on education from educators' perspective, which allowed me to consider the possibility of going into teaching. I am now considering pursuing further education and career opportunities which allow me to teach, starting with learning how to teach others in my student organization commitments during undergrad.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

Enrichment funds have allowed me the opportunity to pursue this internship over the summer in place of a paid-internship. The education I have received in my ENGL and CMLIT classes have given me the skills to be able to read current scholarship, allowing me to succeed in this internship.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program trained me in the ability to read, write, and communicate professionally and academically through the one-year course in "Rhetoric and Civic Life". In being trained in an education of leadership, I was able to use the skills of management and communication during my internship.

This past summer, I interned with the office of Public Affairs in the Office of the Secretary for the Department of Transportation. I was placed in this position through the Future Leaders in Public Service program. I worked closely with the digital manager to create and post content on the Department and Secretary Buttigieg's social media accounts. I developed campaigns and analyzed platform analytics, presenting them to the entire Public Affairs team. I also got to write a press release on the anniversary of the ADA, do research for the Secretary's speech writers, and lead a cohort of interns through a special project. During my time there, I also got to tour an air traffic control tower and attend events featuring USDOT leadership.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience impacted me academically because it gave me the opportunity to apply what I've learned from my classes and apply them in a new way. I have experience working in digital media from prior internships and on-campus leadership, but this experience allowed me to apply it to the federal government. Using my knowledge from classes and combining it with prior experience really set me up for success in this position.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

I have always been interested in working in the federal government, but have spent most of my undergraduate education exploring what aspect of the federal government I want to work in after graduation. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed working in public affairs and how much policy was involved in it in addition to communication and media. Living in DC was also a great experience, and I'm definitely interested in moving there after I graduate in the spring. I also got to meet and network with a ton of public servants with the most fascinating career journeys, and the connections I made will really benefit me in my future career! Because of this experience and past experiences, I am excited to begin a career in politics and strategic communication after graduation.

Working in the Career Enrichment Network as a network assistant has exposed me to many opportunities and resources available for liberal arts students. This experience will definitely stick with me forever. We went to three different cities: Ibagué, Bogotá, and Cartagena. I had a blast getting to know more students at Penn State as well as students at the University of Ibagué. We got to meet so many cool people and learn about the different cultures. The whole trip was so memorable but the moment that stuck out to me the most was hiking through the rainforest with students from Ibagué.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This trip definitely challenged my Spanish abilities and I feel like I came back with improved skills. I also feel like I have a better understanding on the culture and history of Colombia which has already helped me in class discussions this semester.

Without her help and her stories from her experiences in Colombia, I probably would have never thought to go to this amazing place.

This experience greatly helped improve not only my Spanish, but also my confidence in practicing it with others. I also had the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Spain, along with witnessing and experiencing some of the topics of our classes in real life.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I worked with the Preventing Targeted Violence (PTV) team at the Institute, a subdivision focused on solutions to preventing Domestic Violent Extremism (DVE), radicalization, and hate-based violence. Over the summer, I completed research, did administrative work, and attended events to support team objectives. I contributed the most work to building the database of the Prevention Practitioners Network, the interdisciplinary network of professionals united to end hate-based violence. I was fortunate enough to attend events on international actors in the Ukraine crisis on Capitol Hill, the Invent2Prevent competition final presentations at the Department of Homeland Security, and the PTV team’s Summer Symposium at CFR.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience impacted me academically by challenging my abilities in a real-world environment. Despite having practiced writing many papers and presentations, managing this academic task with evolving situations, hard deadlines, and coordination with senior coworkers was challenging. This experience certainly helped to strengthen my time management skills, as well as my ability to take initiative on a project. My public speaking skills also improved, as I spoke with many leaders at the Institute, and briefed my team on issues with fellow interns weekly.

Exposure to different career paths within my interest area and to DC culture will most likely prove most useful as I begin my professional career.

During the Fall 2022, I completed an exchange program with the National University of Singapore. This experience abroad was only my third time leaving the United States, and it not only confirmed my love of travel, but introduced me to new cultures, friends, and experiences that I will never forget.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, this experience challenged me to adapt to a new culture, learning environment, and teaching style while keeping up with and maintaining rigorous coursework with high standards. Facing these new obstacles during my fifth year allowed me to rediscover my passion for my studies and find new ways to teach myself concepts and succeed in the classroom.

My time in Singapore was eye-opening regarding my studies in International Affairs and International Politics. The Republic of Singapore is 57 years old, much younger than the United States, and many countries in the Southeast Asian region have similar histories. I was able to adapt my studies to a global perspective while gaining a better understanding of the impact of the United States across Southeast Asia.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

In the Fall 2022 semester I participated in a study abroad in Santiago de Chile, focused on politics and social justice. My studies included human rights in Latin America, native cultures and indigenous rights, economic development in Chile, and an internship. I also witnessed first-hand the unique Chilean constitutional referendum and the ensuing protests that broke out.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This study abroad was an enriching academic experience. My coursework was conducted entirely in Spanish, which as a native Spanish-speaker improved my professional Spanish skills. Additionally, it was enlightening to learn about Latin American politics and history from Latin American professors, who provided a different viewpoint than what is taught in the US. These experiences highlighted the differences in a country that is transitioning and strengthening its democratic institutions (Chile), with a country that is a constitutional monarchy (Jordan where I studied abroad last semester), and the US, which is currently experiencing democratic backsliding.

In addition to my coursework, I completed an internship with Escuela Amor de Dios, a primary school in a Santiago where students were primarily immigrants from around Latin America. Working there was valuable since I would like to work as an immigration lawyer in the future, and it provided a whole new outlook on the experiences of immigrants around the world. Chile is a special case as it only recently has seen an influx in immigrants, so the government is actively working to build out infrastructure.

During the trip, we visited the University of Curacao, Human Rights Defense Curacao, the U.S. Consulate, and other advocacy organizations to learn about race and the criminal justice system in Curacao.

How did this experience impact you academically?

As a student outside of the Criminology department, the experience exposed me to an unfamiliar discipline. The experience pushed me to think critically and consider how I can incorporate what I learned on the trip in my own research and fields of study.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I loved everything about my study abroad experience. Although the classes were somewhat different from the ones we take in America, I still had a good experience. I went to the Vrije Universiteit (VU) and a typical class week would include having class once or twice a week, and on the days we don't have a class we would study at home. The VU separates into blocks and the fall consists of two blocks. A block is typically 6-7 weeks in which on the final week we have exams, written or multiple choice that is a summary of everything we have learned. There is no homework except for readings and some classes require a paper or project instead of an exam. Class weeks are very short thus, I was usually experiencing Amsterdam by going to restaurants or eating out with friends. Sometime we even traveled to other areas in Europe.

My experience made me realize that I would not mind going to law school especially since I loved my law class. I realized I was more stressed out school-wise in Amsterdam than I was in America. Although there was no homework just readings, I felt as though I needed to study all day long in order to pass the final exam. My experience made me realize that I actually appreciate the homework that the U.S. schools give us! Most of the students in the program loved that we had no homework because it was peaceful and they were not stressed. Everyone's experience is different so don't worry too much when deciding to study abroad.

Before studying abroad I did not know if I wanted to go to law school, but after taking a certain law class (Comparative law) with IES, I realized that law school would not be bad. I plan on taking a gap year while working before I go to law school.

During this program, I spent one month in England studying at the IES Centre to get acclimated to the British tutorial system. In London, I was able to do a lot of exploring across the city and I was also in London at the time of the late Queen's passing. Then in October, I moved into Oxford to start the Michaelmas term as a Visiting Student at St. Catherine's College. In Oxford, I studied the Ancient Near East and Roman Statuary for 8 weeks.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience really challenged my academic capabilities as the tutorial system is entirely different from the educational system in the United States. Each week, I had to write 1-2 essays and read more books for research than I have in my entire academic career. The tutorial system was beneficial as every week I would have a 1 on 1 session with a tutor to discuss my research and learn more about the assigned topic for that week. Also, the lectures are about 1 to 2 hours long, and most of the time you can choose which lecture you'd like to attend. This experience pushed me to improve my research and academic writing skills.

This experience makes my career goals seem less of a reach, and it has sparked an intense interest for me to pursue a career in academia. I was able to network with professors and graduate students who are really passionate about their field, and they are highly encouraging of newcomers. Studying in Oxford exposed me to some of the best academics in my field of study, and it has encouraged me to continue my academic career beyond Penn State.

The College of the Liberal Arts was critical in allowing me this opportunity to study at the University of Oxford. The application materials for this experience were recommendation letters, a personal statement, and a writing sample, and it was the College of the Liberal Arts that exposed me to such supportive professors to help me in this process. (My writing sample was a writing exam from one of my CAMS courses!) The scholarship funding of the College of the Liberal Arts was also extremely helpful, as the funds allowed me to participate in such a prestigious program without worry of adding to my student debt.

The Paterno Fellows Program pushes each fellow to push the boundaries of their academic capabilities, which encouraged me to apply to this program. I am conducting research on the potential overlap between borderline personality disorder (a condition defined by a pattern of unstable relationships, emotions, and self-image) and autism spectrum disorder (a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social interaction impairments and abnormal/repetitive interests). There are multiple papers on this overlap, all with differing conclusions. I am performing a meta-analysis to synthesize the results and better understand how the conditions relate.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Throughout my college career, I have read research studies and participated in the collection of data. However, the process of doing my own independent research has taught me how to come up with a question and systematically investigate the topic. I've also learned how to write the results in a way that can be shared within the scientific community and beyond. These tools will be incredibly helpful in graduate school.

I am planning on attending graduate school to receive a Ph.D. in either school, child clinical, or child counseling psychology. Studying abroad in Rome, I lived like the Romans do. I attended courses with other American students four days per week to study locally relevant topics. I adapted to Italian life, learning how to enjoy little details, slow down, and live with more passion. The program included numerous socially engaging events, building a unique culture within the student population that fostered strong bonds. The experience was the time of my life.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, I strengthened my passion for art history, diving deep into local art. With an incredible collection of public art around the city, as well as magnificent museums, my art history course scheduled weekly excursions to view the art we were studying. This hands-on style extended to all my courses; Italian language improved my daily communication with locals and international trade helped me understand exchange rates of the different currency that Europe uses. The relevant, useful, and accessible material improved my learning.

I participated in an embedded study abroad trip to Cairo, Egypt, during winter break for ARAB 99. During the trip, we visited different museums and archaeological sites related to ancient Egypt, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, as well as more modern historical sites, such as the Citadel of Saladin and the Muhammad Ali Mosque. We also participated in different cultural experiences, such as a cooking class and a Nubian and Sufi dance show.

How did this experience impact you academically?

As a student in the Middle East Studies and Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies programs, the opportunity to interact with both the ancient and modern history of Egypt was surreal. The experience allowed me to deepen my knowledge of Egypt beyond what I previously learned in the classroom. It also pushed me to think critically about prevailing conceptions of Egypt in Western media and popular culture.

My work over the fall centered on stewardship; specifically helping to show donors why their generosity matters and how it has been impactful.

This experience impacted me academically by developing the skills I have learned in the classroom. During the internship, I went to Special Collections in the Paterno library, helping me practice archiving and records searching. As a history major, this real-world experience with the archives was extremely beneficial and quite educational.

This experience has impacted my career goals in so many different ways. I was able to practice transferable skills that will certainly help me in the future such as time-management and problem solving and self-management. In this role, I worked alongside Professor Wanner with The Working Group, which is a research network of scholars, based throughout numerous countries, who engage in interdisciplinary study of the intersection of religion and public life in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. I worked to maintain the working group's website, and ensured that all events, both hybrid, remote, and in-person ran smoothly by providing technological support.

How did this experience impact you academically?

In this role I regularly looked forward to learning more about historical research, while also learning about modern research practices in this field, while broadening my own understanding of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. I obtained course credit for this experience, and broadened my understanding of history in fields I would normally not have been exposed to. I have especially appreciated hearing first hand from researchers.

In Fall of 2022 I went on an embedded trip to Curaçao with CRIM 451. We studied the culture, history, and criminal justice system of the island. Being a Dutch Caribbean island, Curaçao has been heavily influenced by the Netherlands. Throughout our trip we got to see just how much the Netherlands impacted life on the island. It was a wonderfully educational experience.

How did this experience impact you academically?

It allowed me to experience a culture vastly different from my own. It also opened my eyes to how different the criminal justice system was to the United States system. To be able to study such a diverse and intriguing system in person was an experience I’ll never be able to replicate. I can't put into words how beneficial this program was to the course.

While on the island we visited Human Rights Defense Curaçao, I had never been able to directly interact with people involved in the human rights crisis of asylum seekers. This experience was incredibly moving, it made me realize just how diverse the criminal justice system is.

I traveled to the island of Curaçao with my CRIM 451 class. Since this was a web course, I had not met anyone in my class prior to traveling. While touring many important sites and getting a sense of the rich history of the island, I was able to bond with my peers to an extent I did not think was possible and feel more connected not just to my class but to the world around me as well.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Though my primary major is Political Science with a large personal focus on domestic policy, I have always wanted to travel abroad to some extent during college. This class was a perfect way to stay on track with my accelerated graduation schedule while refusing to lose out on an unforgettable experience. Seeing the way another country's justice system worked has influenced the way I want to shape ours domestically.

I believe that this experience will impact the way I strive to help people as someone in the policy field. I have always seen the importance of pulling solutions from suggestions from those in the community since they know their situation better than an outsider could, but I had previously underestimated the importance of seeing other models and case studies to build solutions off of as well.

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

The class I took was a course based on crime, race, and justice. In Curacao, we learned about their diverse culture and how it affects their country, particularly crime and domestic disputes. Because it has become a place of refuge for many Venezuelans, there are different perspectives around the country on who should be allowed to live there. We were also able to observe how the Atlantic slave trade greatly impacted the country and how the African descendant culture has been blended with the Dutch culture and many others.

How did this experience impact you academically?

The class was very informational about Curacao, but I was able to learn more from actually being in the country. I got to learn about their laws and how they impact their citizens. We also visited a few organizations that particularly focused on women's rights and immigration, which is an integral part of the topics we discussed in Crim 451 - Crime, Race, and Justice.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

When I graduate, I want to work in prison policy. My goal is to work toward reforming prisons. Going to Curacao, I was able to see that this is a fight in other countries besides the United States. It allowed me to broaden my goals and consider the possibility of going to other countries to help with their prison systems as well. I received a plethora of information from the U.S. Consulate in Curacao to help with this process.

I was able to fund a little under half of the trip because of the Career Enrichment Network's enrichment funding. It was difficult finding scholarships and grants to be able to pay for it, but with the help of enrichment funding, some of the expenses were covered and it helped my parents and I significantly.

Last summer, I participated in the Summer Analyst internship program at Goldman Sachs. Upon the successful completion of my internship, I will be returning full-time to Goldman Sachs for two years as a Global Markets Legal Analyst in Dallas, Texas, before pursuing a J.D./M.B.A. program. Last summer, I rotated throughout Global Markets Legal in structured products and its committee, ETFs, Marquee, and hedge-fund onboarding. When I return, I will focus on structured products and their associated deal reviews, closings, and filings with our outside counsel.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My experience at the firm directly influenced my thesis research questions, which stem from exposure to the Fortune 100 during the summer. Approaching employment arbitration from the lens of top-earning companies was a strong academic influence being surrounded by global markets had upon me.

"Upon the successful completion of my internship, I will be returning full-time to Goldman Sachs for two years as a Global Markets Legal Analyst in Dallas, Texas, before pursuing a J.D./M.B.A. program."

How will this experience impact your career goals?

The Summer Analyst program allowed me to get my foot in the door at the firm. I was exposed to the world of finance, capital markets, and legal. Without this introduction, I would have never met the mentors I look up to and communicate with on a weekly basis, or be so excited to return in July.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

School of Labor & Employment Relations advisor Katelyn Perry encouraged me to take classes outside my comfort zone and explore different fields during my first and second years here. When I settled on adding on the Finance major and the Legal Environment of Business minor to complete my Labor major, Katelyn was essential in helping me painlessly schedule and pick out summer classes so I could graduate on time while freeing up my third-year summer so I could fully immerse myself in the Summer Analyst program. Liberal Arts Alumni Mentor Chelsie Rimel invested hours upon end in me, especially when I had my Superday interview at the firm. Chelsie provided mock interviews, resume feedback, and encouragement throughout the process, offering a real lens into the legal environment at that time. Without the College of the Liberal Arts advising and alumnae resources, I would not have been as focused and enthralled in the firm, city of Dallas, or the work itself.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program encouraged me to take three additional International Language (IL) courses which I would have never thought to have taken! This immersive global perspective enabled through our academic plan expanded my labor education to include a global perspective instead of a sole United States-based lens, opening my heart and mind to international labor relations and human resources management best practices.
