Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I spent about 3 weeks exploring Rome, Italy with a wonderful group of faculty and students. Our class was able to gain an in-depth knowledge of Roman history through tours of famous sites like the Roman Forum, the Mausoleum of Hadrian, and Trajan's Markets. Our travels also extended outside of the city of Rome with visits to Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, and Florence.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Participating in this study abroad experience has been the highlight of my liberal arts education and has prepared me for future academic success. As a student of history, a hands-on approach is essential to truly comprehending the ancient world. The ability to be amongst archaeological sites strengthens ones understanding of Rome's unique identity and culture. This enriching experience, where I was able to immerse myself in the center of Roman history, has effectively prepared me for future international study.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

I wish to continue to graduate study in the field of History. This study abroad experience has provided me with the skills needed to navigate international travel and study. Being exposed to Italian culture and language has provided me with greater respect for the country's rich history. Furthermore, this program has aided me in developing global awareness, a characteristic that is necessary for my future career goals.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

The enrichment funds awarded through the College of the Liberal Arts made this experience possible. Without this funding, I would have never been able to commit to this study abroad experience. Furthermore, this program was led by faculty members who genuinely cared and prioritized the success of their students. These professors were able to provide us with an enriching experience despite the (slight) craziness of a post-pandemic world.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows program strives to provide students with numerous opportunities for academic and professional development. I feel this experience directly falls in line with the program's mission of enhancing Liberal Arts education.
