Minor: Global Health
Hometown: Washington, Pennsylvania
Experience Time: Fall 2020

Give us a brief summary of your experience?

I am currently a community development intern at the American Cancer Society, representing the Greater Pittsburgh Region. Although my internship experience is virtual, I still believe I am getting the full experience, as I still get to work on community projects, engage with my supervisor and my fellow employees, and advocate for cancer research. Through volunteer and group management, social media administration, and community outreach, I have been helping individual Relay for Life teams join forces with one another in order to foster an inclusive, tight-knit, cancer-fighting community - even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This internship has allowed me to take information I have learned in both liberal arts and biobehavioral health settings and apply it to real-life issues.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship has allowed me to take information I have learned in both liberal arts and biobehavioral health settings and apply it to real-life issues. Even though I am still in the midst of my internship, I can feel my confidence, knowledge, and capability growing, which I can then translate into the rest of my academic studies and my future career endeavors.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

As a women's, gender, & sexuality studies major and a global health minor, I hope to pursue health advocacy - especially for women and LGBTQIA+ people - as a career. The American Cancer Society has reaffirmed my interest in pursuing a healthcare-oriented career. The organization has also allowed me to become more immersed in the promotion of healthcare research, which is something that I may want to engage in during my post-grad career.

How has the College of the Liberal Arts helped you to find and/or succeed in this experience (e.g., adviser, faculty, staff, enrichment funds, etc.)?

The PSU College of Liberal Arts has not only supported me in finding internship opportunities, but also in succeeding in them. My current Internship Experience course (LA 495) has kept me on track with my internship duties, and it has also allowed me to track my progress, interests, and goals.
