What was the best part of your experience?

The best part of my experience has been the ability to see, in one summer, the issues that matter most to me from both a public and private perspective. The issue of public vs. private has been a pervasive one for me; I felt that I couldn't make a sound decision to enter one side right out of college without having experienced the other. Seeing the same issues of national security and defense from both perspectives has allowed me to gain the valuable insight needed to make the right choice for me.

Being able to interact in real time with people established in the field that I've been interested in for so long has been monumental to understanding exactly where it is that I fit in

How did this experience impact you academically?

Academically, this experience has allowed me to apply all of the abstracts of my learning to reality, which has greatly expanded and solidified my learning. I feel that, with this heightened understanding of the concepts I learn in school, I am better prepared to take on new subject areas and classes that I previously would have been wary to attempt.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience has been the defining point for my career goals. Being able to interact in real time with people established in the field that I've been interested in for so long has been monumental to understanding exactly where it is that I fit in. Identifying where my skills can best contribute to the mission of national security has reignited a passion for the field that will carry me through the search for a full-time job after I graduate.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

The Paterno Fellows Program (PFP) has been an invaluable source of inspiration and guidance for getting myself to this point of success. My mentor, who I matched with through the Liberal Arts Alumni Mentor Program, was ecstatic to see I was a part of the PFP, as he had played football under Coach Paterno and owed much of his own success to such wonderful guidance. When I detailed my need to find a suitable internship as required by PFP, my mentor jumped into action and found me these two amazing opportunities I've had the privilege of experiencing this summer.
