What was the best part of your experience?

The best part of my experience was being part of the team; I felt like my work was actually helping the institution. I liked being able to sit in on meetings and brainstorm ways to make our operations more effective. I felt like my work was valuable and that I contributed to the team.

I feel as though I have a greater understanding of the American Police system that I can utilize in my future Criminology courses

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience gave me the ability to learn about law enforcement and the training processes of corrections officers and police officers. I was able to apply many of the concepts that I have learned in my Criminology courses to the work I was doing at JASI. Learning how to communicate with law enforcement and learning the terminology used when discussing training and policing has been helpful. I feel as though I have a greater understanding of the American Police system that I can utilize in my future Criminology courses.

How will this experience impact your career goals?

This experience gave me insight into how an office is run, how financial decisions are made, and how working with law enforcement can be unique. This internship has exposed me to a career in a law-enforcement aligned field. I had never considered working in an office like JASI, but now I believe I could have a career in a field like this one.

How has the Paterno Fellows Program had an impact on this experience?

I was given funding that allowed me to participate in this internship, which was extremely helpful. I did not have to worry about out-of-pocket costs, such as purchasing business professional clothing and finding transportation to and from the workplace and the courthouse. Receiving funding gave me a chance to have a great opportunity without having to worry about financing it.
