How did you learn about this opportunity?

I learned about this opportunity through my Labor and Employment Relations academic adviser, Katelyn Perry.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

It was an awesome and eye opening experience. Visiting Google, facebook, Yelp, Uber and other companies gave me great insight into human resources (HR) in the tech industry. I also made some great connections with some Penn State alumni at these firms. This trip helped me get a better idea of what kind of company and what division of HR I want to work for after college.

How did this experience impact you academically?

Visiting these organizations helped me piece together everything that we had been learning this semester in LER 497. It was a lot of hands on learning with what these firms do and also helped me pick up the lingo the tech world uses. It also gave me a better insight of the culture of high tech firms and how their culture differs from other companies' cultures. It also helped me understand how these cultures help the employees work more efficiently and enjoy work more overall.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

This had a huge impact on my goals and plans for after college. Before this experience, I didn't really know what kind of company I wanted to work for after college. Now I really am going to aim at trying to work for a high tech firm. I loved the culture of these companies and I loved how there was so much opportunity for growth and learning. I knew before that I wanted to start off my career in recruiting, but now I know I want to try and be a recruiter in the high tech industry.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

This was a great experience that anybody who is interested into going into HR should try. You make so many great connections and get to visit so many companies, which are great to visit and experience their culture. You gain a new understanding of this industry and learn how HR professionals in this industry approach culture.
