My advisors suggested that an internship in Congress would be ideal for my future goals. I applied for this internship through the member of Congress's website

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

This internship experience is ideal for any student studying Political Science. Upon conclusion of my experience, my primary takeaway was being able to better understand how Congress works on a day-to-day basis. This includes walking the Capitol subway day after day on the same path our representatives take, seeing the role of each staff member, and hearing from constituents on each issue.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience had a positive experience on me academically. The simplest way to describe it would be that it’s great to have a vision of where your degree can take you. Having seen the light at the end of the tunnel, I understand what coursework would best be able to help me. In addition, all of the course-work I do take has enhanced meaning. Whenever you study an institution and organization that you have been part of, it makes things easier to understand.

"This experience showed me just how much Congress meets with various organizations and business to coordinate legislation."

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

My career goals include either working in Congress or in government relations for a company. This experience showed me just how much Congress meets with various organizations and business to coordinate legislation. It has given me a greater respect and understanding of what it means to be a lobbyist. Without this experience, I still would not understand the various roles that each member of staff has. Now that I do, it’s more straightforward for me to know how to get from point A to point B.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

I would definitely recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students. Whether you would like to work for a member of Congress one day or not, it will give you a huge understanding of how our government functions.
