How did you learn about this opportunity?

I was looking for potential internships that I could apply for. I ended up searching on a local government department-by-department basis based on ones that I was familiar with. I was then lucky enough to find this opportunity.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

This internship has so far been a great experience. I have been able to go out with officers on patrol to respond to and mitigate crime, but I have also been able to go through various training such as inservice, Tactical Response Team (TRT) training, and have even worked with the detective section to analyze cell phone data.

How did this experience impact you academically?

While I have garnered a lot of good information in the classroom throughout my college experience, this internship has really helped me to see a lot of this information first-hand. Everything from someone being arrested all the way to going to court.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

I plan on going into law enforcement and perhaps one day the FBI or Secret Service. My ultimate goal is to help people whether it's a homeless veteran struggling with PTSD or someone who just got robbed. So this internship has shown me how some officers truly go out of their way to help people, even if it is just stopping and talking to a homeless person for a few minutes. I have also learned how to handle situations from minor citations to more serious crimes such as fights.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

I highly recommend this program to other students. The State College Police Department is a very professional organization and a lot of their officers are very willing to help you by offering you advice. You are also exposed to a variety of police work including TRT, criminal investigations, patrol, records, and firearms training.
