Internship with Penn State LGBTQA Student Resource Center
Up one level
Stacy Jarvis

Major: International Politics
Hometown: Blue Bell, PA

How did you learn about this opportunity?

I used to go to the LGBTQA Student Resource Center a lot as a freshman. I hung out there and made some very good friendships and connections with the staff. I attended discussion groups and started helping out with Pride Week and other projects. When I found out about the internships they had for undergraduates I figured I already went there a lot so why not try for an internship.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

My experience as a hospitality and office management intern has been so enlightening. It has shown me that I can turn helping people into a career.

My experience as a hospitality and office management intern has been so enlightening. It has shown me that I can turn helping people into a career. I love working with the patrons of the center and helping them find what they need or just talking! The staff I work with are amazing and have helped me to be more confident in my ability to do any task assigned to me regardless of whether I had done it before.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This internship has improved my time management skills. I work very concrete hours, so I have to plan my schoolwork around my work there. Also, all of the staff say that our schoolwork comes first, so when we have large events such as Pride Week we must maintain our grades or we are not supposed to come to events.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

My career goals are to work in the non-profit world or to work with a non-governmental organization of some sort. This internship has made me realize that I want to work with people more than anything. I used to think I wanted to do counterterrorism analysis, but through this internship I have realized that my place in the world is with others.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

Completely! The staff in the LGBTQA Student Resource Center are amazing and only want to help you achieve your dreams, so I would recommend this to anybody who wants to help others and make the Penn State community better!
