Internship with IPG Mediabrands
Up one level
Julia McClarnon

Major: Human Resources and Employment Relations
Minor: Psychology
Hometown: Stony Point, NY

How did you learn about this opportunity?

This agency is owned by the company that I had interned at the two summers before this past summer. I met a recruiter for IPG Mediabrands at a company wide networking event and contacted her when I was searching for internships.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

My experience was wonderful. I performed a large amount of full-time HR equivalent work and also completed a lot of project work. On top of my individual work, my intern program, or "The Residency", involved Learn and Earns about the specific business units under IPG Mediabrands; we learned what they do, who their clients are, the culture and personality of their business unit, and how they contributed towards the overall bottom line. A particularly great aspect of the Learn and Earns was the chance to learn about many aspects of the media and marketing industry. We also participated in a summer-long intern project where we were tasked with identifying a potential client and creating a mock business pitch tailored toward that client.

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience impacted me academically because it furthered my ability to take what I learned in the classroom and apply it towards real life, as well as being able to take what I have seen in the working world and expand on those tendencies and learn more about their occurrence. Learning without experience or experience without learning means nothing; the two go hand in hand. I find myself being able to more fully grasp concepts because I can logically relate them to real world applications and to my own experience. I am also able to enhance the learning experience for others in my class who may not have had the same experiences or opportunities. Specifically, I find myself more capable of looking at concepts from a media and technical aspect and being able to relate situations back to that.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

Participating in this internship has brought me one step closer to obtaining my ideal first full-time position.

I plan to one day become a Human Resources Professional/Business Partner. After graduation, my goal is to obtain a position in a talent operations, talent acquisition, or HR generalist field. This internship was very helpful with this goal not only because it gave me the ability to apply my knowledge, but also because I have that real world experience that I previously mentioned. Human Resources is unique in that you learn a large amount of what to do in the classroom, but you also learn a lot about how to do it in real world experiential application. Participating in this internship has brought me one step closer to obtaining my ideal first full-time position because my manager told me at the end of my internship that she would like to hire me if they have an open position when I graduate, which I am very excited about!

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

Of course I would. It allowed me to grow not only as an employee who learned what is expected in all types of working environments, but I also learned about my industry and the media industry as a whole.
