How did you learn about this opportunity?

I found about Textron Systems at an information session that the School of Labor and Employment Relations held last fall. I attended the information session and learned about the various internship opportunities they were offering for the summer and was informed on how to apply. I also attended their interview day at the Nittany Lion Inn to learn more about their internship opportunities. I was then extended an offer a week after interviewing.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

During my internship I was presented with significant work that provided true value to the organization.

My experience at Textron was extremely beneficial and I truly enjoyed my time working for my team. I was working as an Human Resources Business Partner intern and supported a team of senior HR Business Partners. During my internship I was presented with significant work that provided true value to the organization. I was also able to shadow other HR teams to learn more about their roles and responsibilities in the organization, and how they contributed to the company's success. I networked with top talent who really embraced interns, and worked hard to maximize our experience while at Textron.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My internship experience impacted my academic career in that it gave me insight on what classes to take to excel in the workplace after graduation. I realized that some courses would be beneficial to take so that I could apply the course concepts effectively to my first full-time job. If I noticed any gap in the knowledge I've attained in school and what was needed in the workplace, I took note of it and enrolled in the appropriate classes for the next semester.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

Working for a senior leadership team shed light on my overall career aspirations. The talent development team of Textron has resources available where they outline career paths of people in your particular field. I was fortunate enough to have this resource available for my review so that I could gain a better understanding of how people in my field grow and develop. Shadowing top talent also helps you gain a better understanding of how some people paved their own career paths and give information on how one could do the same. I now know where I see myself professionally upon graduation.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

I would certainly recommend that students take advantage of internship opportunities prior to graduation. Having the chance to apply the concepts learned in the classroom to the real world is extremely beneficial towards professional development. Internship opportunities can also confirm students' interest in the career path they are pursuing. Internships can also provide insight on what additional interests students may have that they would have never been exposed to unless they worked in their program. I had the ability to learn about the different facets of my major (Human Resources) and identify my interest in a specific facet of HR. I was able to achieve this understanding through my internship experience.
