How did you learn about this opportunity?

I actually created this opportunity. When I returned to school I was looking for an internship experience in a law firm, and reached out to several law firms in State College. Rehmeyer & Allatt contacted me back and after a second interview I was hired on the spot!

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

My current internship experience is incredibly interesting and fulfilling. I currently have two major areas of focus for my internship, the first is my social media and marketing responsibilities designed at increasing the firms name recognition and bringing new clients to the firm. My second responsibility is assisting with various legal and secretarial tasks to help the firm run smoothly. I answer letters, pull documents, do legal research, and help put various legal documents together. I also work with the two lawyers at the firm, and they have been a phenomenal resource in helping to teach me about the legal world, provide wonderful insight into the law, and what steps I should take to further my future law career.

How did this experience impact you academically?

My current major is Communication Arts and Sciences and I believe this internship is extremely relevant to this major because so much of what I do at my internship involves communication and rhetoric. Within the marketing portion of my job I use targeted words and attractive marketing options designed to draw the reader in and absorb my message. Within my CAS major, I have taken classes in persuasion and propaganda that have taught me the difference between ethical and unethical forms of advertisement and persuasion. I also use my legal experience at the firm to help with many of the CAS classes I take, such as Rhetoric and Law and Argumentation.

My internship has been personally fulfilling and I would absolutely recommend a legal internship to other students.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

Within a few years of graduating I would like to attend law school, but after immediately graduating next December I am trying to find a job as a paralegal or legal secretary. My internship has impacted my job plans by providing me with experience that will assist me in finding a job upon graduation. Furthermore my internship has helped me to decide that I absolutely want to attend law school. It has also helped me to decide that I have an interest in practicing criminal law, which is very relevant because my internship has given me my first introduction into that area of law.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

I would absolutely recommend this experience to other liberal arts students. Working in a law firm has been an incredibly beneficial experience because I have learned so much about what it really means to pursue a career in law. Starting this internship, I thought I knew a lot more about law than I actually do. Learning about just how vast and complicated the legal system is has shown me that I have a lot to learn, but am very excited about learning more about how the law works. Additionally I would recommend this experience to others because I believe that passionate advocacy is necessary for our judicial system to function efficiently. My position at Rehmeyer & Allatt has allowed me to work on both sides of plaintiff and defendant, help people who have been injured in a personal injury accident, and even help those who have been wrongly accused of a crime. My internship has been personally fulfilling and I would absolutely recommend a legal internship to other students.
