How did you learn about this opportunity?

I learned about this opportunity from reading the Network Symplicity listings sent from the College of Liberal Arts, Career Enrichment Network.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

As the returning Talent Development and Diversity Intern at MeadWestvaco (MWV) Corporation, my job is to give day-to-day support with respect to the management of their internship program and with their global diversity and inclusion initiatives. Last year, one of my primary projects was the creation of MWV's pilot Campus Ambassador Program. I was given the task of designing and maintaining a nationwide program that allows their interns to increase MWV branding efforts on their respective campuses. Therefore, my goal for this year is to analyze the program results and feedback received in an effort to improve its quality and what it offers students.

"I used my internship experience multiple times to talk about how to effectively lead, manage, and assist in a professional atmosphere."

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience aided academically, by expanding upon the invaluable KSAO’s (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics) I’ve gained from the MWV Human Resource (HR) department that can be easily utilized in the classroom. I used my internship experience multiple times to talk about how to effectively lead, manage, and assist in a professional atmosphere.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

This MWV experience will continue to provide opportunities and work variability that is endless because of the MWV universal networks I work with. Moreover, this internship is unique because it allows me to develop my skills in all facets of the HR field (recruiting, compensation, training), while allowing me to collaborate with other departments (supply chain, tax, graphic design) to complete my projects. By being exposed to the varied HR functions, I will be able to gain valuable skills that will impact my future career goals. I find that I am motivated by opportunities that challenge me, so I know that I will not want to stay in one field my entire career. This internship program will allow me to asses my interests, strengths, and opportunities for growth.
