How did you learn about this opportunity?

I found this program through the Penn State Global Programs website.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

This experience has been a life-changing adventure. Through my time abroad I have been able to travel to Western China, near Tibet, I went to Thailand on my spring break, and most importantly I stayed 3 1/2 months in one of the world's most modern, fastest developing cities, Shanghai. I am happy to have come to China and been able to break many preexisting stereotypes.

"There is truly no better way to learn a language than through absorbing yourself in the culture."

How did this experience impact you academically?

My classes with CIEE were definitely not easy. If you plan to take the accelerated language program you need to be sure you have a good work ethic. However, that being said, due to my hard work every day and my teachers continually challenging me, my Chinese has improved ten-fold.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

My ultimate goal is to be a translator. I would be no where near achieving this goal if it weren't for studying abroad in Shanghai. There is truly no better way to learn a language than through absorbing yourself in the culture. After studying abroad here, I was able to decide that I want to find a job where I am required to travel back and forth between China and the United States.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

Yes, yes, and yes. Anybody can travel to Europe, but how many people can say they've been to Asia? It's truly a completely different world from the West that you will never understand unless you experience it with your own eyes. The nature is breathtaking and the cities are so modern. I am grateful to be able to experience living in a developing country as it moves into being a new world power!
