General Information 

This award provides recognition to staff in the College of the Liberal Arts whose commitment to sustainability is exceptional and best exemplifies professionalism and dedication to the sustainability mission of the College and the University. Penn State’s Sustainability Strategic Plan defines sustainability “the simultaneous pursuit of human health and happiness, environmental quality, and economic well-being for current and future generations.” We are looking for an individual staff member, or team of staff members, with an exceptional commitment to sustainability in their daily activities or through an initiative that has enhanced sustainability in the College of the Liberal Arts. We seek self-nominations as well as nominations from department and program heads, supervisors, and coworkers for all types of work.

Criteria 

We are looking for employees, or a team of employees, with an exceptional commitment to sustainability in their daily activities or through an initiative that has enhanced sustainability in the College of the Liberal Arts.  We seek self-nominations as well as nominations from department and program heads, supervisors, and coworkers for all types of work. 

The employee demonstrates a combination of the following:

    • Demonstrated exemplary commitment to sustainability and impact of actions on advancing sustainability in the College
    • Dedicated to the College and unit mission in the advancement of sustainability initiatives

Nominating Procedures 

Nominations may be made by faculty, staff, students, and alumni.  The nomination shall consist of:

    • Nominator Information
    • Nominee Information
    • One supporting letter from the nominator, not to exceed one page in length

Award

Mini Statue + $500

Eligibility Requirements

Standing and fixed-term, non-exempt, exempt, and technical service employees in the College of the Liberal Arts. 

    • Employed by the College for a minimum of 12 months as of the nomination deadline
    • Must be rated as a successful contributor or above per the performance evaluation metrics and has not had any disciplinary actions within the last 12 months
    • Past recipients of awards are eligible for nomination in the same category after three years unless otherwise specified within the award description

Wondering who to nominate? Sample questions to get you started:

    • Who regularly bikes/uses public transportation/carpools/Cata Vanpool/etc. to cut down on their ecological footprint?
    • Who stands out for reusing and repurposing resources?
    • Who has led efforts to be more sustainable in your departmental activities?
    • Who exemplifies zero-waste by using reusable lunch containers and serving ware, consistently uses a reusable water bottle, and avoids non-recyclable/non-compostable items? 
    • Who actively participates in and/or supports the College Green Team and its efforts or played a key role in reestablishing or continuing their departmental or building Green Team?
    • Who educates others on what sustainability means and its social, economic, and environmental dimensions?
