Mentorships vary. Strong mentees are intentional about the relationship with their mentors, sensitive to the multiple demands on their time, and appreciative of the support their mentors provide. They seek to make the mentorship a good one by investing time and energy to get to know their mentors. They recognize that their mentor’s advocacy is not automatic—it must be earned.

The role of the mentee is to be a true student, absorbing—and when appropriate—challenging the perspectives, knowledge, and life experience of his or her mentor. Mentees need to “use” their mentors and demonstrate initiative by identifying goals, suggesting next steps, and asking for input. Mentees should be willing to responsibly try out their mentor’s suggestions or explore together reasons for declining. Outstanding mentees frequently cultivate relationships with multiple mentors.

The alumni relations office arranges the initial meeting, with a facilitator, on campus or in some cases by phone or video-chat (SKYPE, etc.). Mentor and mentee Handbooks guide you through the steps to draft an action plan and schedule next steps together. As a mentee you are asked to:

  • After your 2nd or 3rd meeting, complete a written mentorship plan—a Compact—with your mentor, to be submitted to the program manager.
  • Complete 3-month, 6-month, and end-of-year program surveys. These brief surveys, conducted on-line, are an important monitoring and program quality tool.

*Internships and job placement opportunities are NOT expected to be a regular part of the mentor program.
