College Township Internship
Up one level
Jeffrey Cheng

Major: Economics, Communication Arts & Sciences
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

How did you learn about this opportunity?

I knew that I wanted to work in government related organizations, so I started by emailing local governments around State College to see if there were any opportunities available. I emailed human resources departments at each of the local townships located in the State College area (Patton Township, Harris Township, State College Borough, and College Township) and I was fortunate to receive this opportunity.

Tell us a little bit about your experience.

I am performing research relative to the community. I am working on improving governmental community outreach and a creation of a new community profile. My learning objectives are understanding how to collect and analyze “big data”, how to expose community awareness through local government, and what government does to interact with their community. Most of my experience is done independently. I am given a project and I provide periodic updates to my supervisor.

"This internship has also taught me the importance of effective communication and self-discipline."

How did this experience impact you academically?

This experience forced me to be better with time management and be a more goal oriented person. Between the internship, classes, and extra curricular-activities, I am jam packed during the school week. This internship has also taught me the importance of effective communication and self-discipline. I must effectively and efficiently communicate with my supervisor to show my professional demeanor. Due to the freedom of this internship, and because it is long-term project based, I must have the self-discipline and priority to get assignments done accordingly. It has pushed me to maximize my daily productivity.

What are your career goals and plans?  How did this experience impact them?

Upon graduation, I plan to work in the public sector. My goal is to work in either local, state, or federal government. I would like to help and give back to this country and what it has provided for me. This experience impacted me greatly. There is so much information available to the public, but it is unknown to them. I would like to expose and give access to citizens to help them be better informed about their government. I would like to get rid of the negative stigma attached to government.

Would you recommend this experience to other Liberal Arts students?

I would definitely recommend this internship experience to other students. This is a great way to get involved with your local government to see how things are functioning. Also, this is a great way to learn about the local community and their views on things. We need to provide greater accessibility for citizens and their government. The networking opportunities are priceless.
