Starting with his Penn State experience, Steve Brose demonstrates generous commitment and dedication to his colleagues and friends within his professional and personal communities.
After earning a bachelor's degree in political science from Penn State and a law degree from Columbia University in 1972, and following a clerkship with a federal appellate judge, he joined the law firm of Steptoe and Johnson LLP in Washington, D.C., rising to head its regulatory and industry affairs department. Over his thirty-five-year career with the law firm, he has become a renowned expert on matters involving energy pipelines and a recognized leader in the field of energy regulation, specializing in regulatory and legal issues regarding the oil and gas pipeline industry.
Among his other client representations, Steve has been counsel to the owners of the Trans Alaska Pipeline since it began operations in 1977. He also served on expert task forces for the World Bank and the U.S. State Department’s Agency for International Development involving pipeline projects in countries that formerly were part of the Soviet Union, and represented the government of Ecuador in its negotiations with a group of oil companies wishing to build a pipeline across that country. Steve is the chief financial officer and a frequent committee chair in the American Bar Association’s Section on Public Utilities, Communication and Transportation Law.
Apart from his professional achievements, Steve is active in pro bono work for his law firm, representing clients who are not able to afford legal representation, currently including an inmate on Delaware’s death row who is appealing his conviction and sentence. Steve believes that it is the responsibility of lawyers to use their skills and experience for those in need. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the National Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under Law.
On behalf of Penn State and the College of the Liberal Arts, Steve has provided key leadership to the overall Grand Destiny Campaign and to the Liberal Arts Development Council as vice chair and to the College on its quest for national leadership. Along with his wife, Janice, Steve has played major roles in the Richards Civil War Era Center and its rise to national prominence by establishing a distinguished lecture and book series, and a graduate scholarship. He is a member of the advisory board for the Richards Civil War Era Center. Inspired by his love of history and the Center's scholarship, Steve is pursuing a master’s degree in history at George Washington University, while continuing in the full-time practice of law.
