Exceptions To Degree Requirements (Course Substitutions)
Senate Policy 82-60
A student is expected to satisfy all University degree requirements (such as General Education, First-Year Seminar, Intercultural and International Competence or United States and International Cultures, Writing Across the Curriculum) that were in effect when the student first scheduled a class after his/her admission or most recent re-enrollment as a degree candidate. Requirements for a program (such as major, minor, option, honors) are those in effect at the time of the student's admission or most recent re-enrollment into that program.
A student wishing permission to deviate in any way from program requirements must have permission from the appropriate college dean. Permission should be obtained prior to enrollment in the course being proposed for substitution.
GUIDELINES FOR CONSIDERING COURSE SUBSTITUTION REQUESTS
- The course to be substituted should be in the same area as the required course or in a closely related area.
- Substitution of a course for a previously failed required course is seldom granted.
- Failure to schedule a required course is not sufficient reason for granting permission for a course substitution. *
STUDENT ACTION
Liberal Art students are required to meet with their academic adviser to discuss their request.
REVIEW
If the adviser believes that the request is appropriate and meets the intent of the requirement, the adviser (or appropriate departmental staff) will submit an electronic course substitution request via the Lotus Notes Course Substitution database. The request will be generally be reviewed within a one-week time frame (depending on the time of the semester).
NOTIFICATION
A letter will be sent to both the student and adviser via email once a decision has been made.
