The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages offers two Russian degrees. The bachelor of arts in Russian provides students with knowledge of the Russian language as well as a broad background in Russian literature, culture, and civilization. The bachelor of science in Russian translation provides students with a high degree of skill in translating from Russian to English. Students are encouraged to use their language skills through contact with native Russian speakers and to participate in the Education Abroad program at St. Petersburg University in Russia or the Volgolgrad Summer Russian Language program.
A Russian Area Studies minor is available, and may be combined with any major at the University. This minor develops a broad base in Russian politics, history, economy, geography, and sociology. The department also offers two minors in Russian and Russian translation for students enrolled in other academic majors.
RELATED EXPERIENCES
Independent study courses give students the opportunity to work independently under the guidance of a faculty member. Many opportunities for education abroad also exist for interested students.
CAREER DIRECTIONS
The federal government employs many liberal arts graduates with a foreign language specialization in the State Department, the National Security Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency. The Departments of Commerce and Labor often appoint personnel with language skills to positions overseas. Other opportunities exist in importing and exporting businesses, translating and interpreting, and with international airlines.
Employment opportunities may be increased by combining Russian with another discipline. An advanced degree is required to teach at the college or university level. Some occupations in which Russian/Russian Translation graduates are employed include: foreign service officer, foreign trade administrator, import/export executive, immigration officer, intelligence specialist, international attorney, journalist, public relations director, teacher (bilingual), translator, and travel agent.
