what opportunities for earning internship credit exist in the college ?
The College has a total of 22 different internship courses that you can enroll in to earn academic credit for your internship. One course, LA 495.1, is open to students from all majors and Colleges, while the other 21 are run by specific Liberal Arts Departments, providing credit for internships related to specific disciplines.
College of the Liberal Arts Internship Course (LA 495.1)
LA 495.1 is designed to accommodate a broad range of career fields and internship sites. This program is available to all Penn State undergraduate students—regardless of college or major—and is an especially good choice if:
- Your department or College offers few or no academic credits for internships,
- the internship you wish to pursue does not relate directly to your major,
- you are exploring majors, and wish to intern in a field in which you have not yet declared a major, or
- you do not meet the requirements for your departmental internship program and have been referred to the College Internship Course.
Departmental Internship Courses (LA Sections 2 - 22)
Many departments in the College of the Liberal Arts have sections of LA 495 reserved primarily for students enrolled in their majors or minors. If the internship you wish to pursue relates to your major, you should contact your major department first to determine if a departmental internship will meet your needs. To find out whom to speak with in your department, consult the Department Internship Contacts list.
You do not need to have already located a specific internship before contacting your department's internship coordinator, but you should have researched opportunities in your field and have a sense of the general type of internship you would like to pursue.
