External Funding Incentive Program
All available evidence indicates that an expanding amount of external funding for faculty research is an essential aspect of the College’s strategic advancement. To provide the best support possible for faculty efforts in this arena, the Research Office has, over the past few years, put in place a number of incentives, including funding for trips to program officers at agencies and foundations, support for release time to prepare major proposals, paying for pre-reviews of draft proposals by leading figures in the subject area, and funding to hire writers with subject matter expertise to help prepare proposals.
Effective July 1, 2007 NEW grants awarded, including competing continuations, submitted through the College Research Office, will be recognized in the following ways: 1. Those awards carrying total direct costs of $100,000-$250,000 over the life of the award will receive either a one course release or $4,000 in the form of a research fund or supplemental summer salary; the timing of the course release must be approved by the department head. 2. Those awards carrying total direct costs of $251,000-$500,000 over the life of the award will receive either a two course release, or $8,000 in the form of a research fund or supplemental summer salary. 3. Those awards with total direct costs over $500,000 over the term or the award will receive a maximum three course release or $12,000; the course release timing must be approved by the department head.
For humanists, we will provide salary support towards closing the salary gap between the smaller but prestigious fellowships, such as a full NEH fellowship, and the faculty member’s full salary.
