General Information

The Graduate Faculty Teaching Award is meant to recognize faculty members for their outstanding teaching performance and their advising of doctoral students or terminal degree students (e.g. MFA). The award is for those who have not received the University's highest accolade for teaching and scholarship (e.g., Evan Pugh Professors, Distinguished Professors, or the Eisenhower and LIndback Awards).

Eligibility

To be considered for this award, a faculty member must meet the following criteria:

  • been a tenured member of the graduate faculty at Penn State for a minimum of seven years;
  • demonstrated excellence in the supervision of graduate students with their doctoral thesis work or culminating project.
Nomination Process

Nominations may be submitted by graduate students, faculty, or staff. Each graduate program is limited to one nomination. An electronic copy of the nomination packet must be submitted in PDF form to the CLA Graduate Office contact, Brandy Bower (bvb2@psu.edu) by October 15, 2009.

Dossiers should be less than twenty-five pages and should include the following, in the order listed:

  • narrative letter of nomination that clearly identifies the outstanding qualities of the nominee;
  • a statement from the nominee discussing his/her teaching philosophy;
  • letters of support from three to five former students and current students detailing how the nominee affected their professional development;
  • a list of the courses that the nominee has taught;
  • a list of advisees who have graduated during the last five years;
  • summary of SRTEs.

Members of the Graduate Council Committee on Fellowships and Awards will select the recipient, who will receive an award of $1,000 at the Faculty/Staff Recognition Luncheon in Spring 2010.
